\section*{Question 1: Typeset the following sentences}
(a) The quadratic equation
\[ax^2+bx+c=0\]
has roots
\[r_1,r_2 = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\]
(b) A real-valued function $f$ is convex on an interval $I$ if
\[ f(\lambda x + (1 - \lambda)y) \leq \lambda f(x) + (1 - \lambda)f(y), \quad \forall x, y \in I, \ 0
\leq \lambda \leq 1. \]
(c) The general solution to the differential equation
\[y''-3y'+2y=0\]
is
\[y=C_1e^x+C_2e^{2x}.\]
(d) The Fermat number $F_n$ is defined as
\[F_n=2^{2^n}+1, \quad n \geq 0. \]

\section*{Question 2: Typeset the following}
(a) Let $x = (x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n)$, where the $x_i$ are nonnegative real numbers. Define
\[M_r(x) = \left(\frac{x_1^r + x_2^r + \dots + x_n^r}{n} \right)^{1/r}, \quad r \in \mathbb{R}
\setminus \{0\},\]
and
\[ M_0(x) = (x_1x_2 \dots x_n)^{1/n}. \]
We call $M_r(x)$ the $r^{th}$ power mean of $x$.\\
\textbf{Claim:}
\[\lim_{r \to 0} M_r(x) = M_0(x). \]
(b) Define the Vandermonde matrix
\[ V_n = \begin{bmatrix}
1 & 1 & 1 & \dots & 1 \\
x_1 & x_2 & x_3 & \dots & x_n \\
x_1^2 & x_2^2 & x_3^2 & \dots & x_n^2 \\
\vdots & \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots \\
x_1^{n-1} & x_2^{n-1} & x_3^{n-1} & \dots & x_n^{n-1}
\end{bmatrix} \]
\textbf{Claim:}
\[\det(V_n) = \prod_{1 \leq i < j \leq n}(x_j-x_i). \]
(c)
\[\begin{bmatrix}a_{11}&a_{12} \\ a_{21}& a_{22} \end{bmatrix} \begin{bmatrix}b_{11} &
b_{12} \\ b_{21} & b_{22} \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix}a_{11}b_{11}+a_{12}b_{21} &
a_{11}b_{12}+a_{12}b_{22} \\ a_{21}b_{11}+ a_{22}b_{21}&a_{21}b_{12}+a_{22}b_{22}

For $x = -1$,
\[e^{-1} = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{(-1)^n}{n!} \]
(b)

Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar, who is also known as Ramanujan, is one of the greatest
mathematicians of all time. The genius mathematician made significant contributions to several
areas of mathematics though he had no formal training. His contributions to number theory,
mathematical analysis, infinite series, and continued fractions are considered extraordinary. He
was born in Erode on 22nd December 1887 to Kuppuswamy Srinivasa Iyengar and
Komalatammal. As a young boy, Ramanujan was a prodigy who developed and discovered
theorems in trigonometry. By the age of 17, he had received several awards. Though he failed in
most subjects except mathematics, his independent research later earned him a fellowship at
the University of Madras.
Ramanujan was elected to the London Mathematical Society in 1917 and to the Royal Society of
London in 1918, becoming one of its youngest fellows. He believed mathematics was a
reflection of divine truth and credited his insights to Goddess Namagiri Thayar. Despite his early
death in 1920 at the age of 32, Ramanujan's more than 4000 results and theorems continue to
influence modern mathematical research.
