THE IMPACT OF IM
ON HIGHER
EDUCATION
5|Page
Task Definition
As we know that everything has its pros and cons even the digital world. Instant Messaging
has negative effects to the Academic Writing of students. IMs are typically written in one
paragraph and this unorganized style is apparent in academic writing, as noted by one
student: “On my papers, I tend to have really bad organization – my thoughts are all spread
out or they’re all in the same long paragraph”. “Student’s papers have poor word choice,
improper spelling, punctuation as well as lack of capitalization. When I asked one of them,
she told me that they do not care about those mechanics when using IMs”, one of the
lecturers said. As I’ll be investigating about IM on Higher Education, the aim it is to search if
there are no IMs that improve students to write the correct grammar when using them,
whereby it is a must to use the correct wording so that they don’t get affected by using
improper spelling when they have to write at school. My target audience will be university
students as they’re the most affected ones when it comes to the academic writing.
I’ll obtain information in the following ways:
Research on Google for more information about the impact of IM on education and
download online articles as it is quicker than any other search engines at bringing
results.
Create electronic questionnaires and email them to NMU students who are using IM.
Make an online interview via Zoom App with Carmen Bekker who’s doing master’s at
NMU Computer Science, she’s also a qualified lecturer.
Make an in-person interview with Kyrad who’s a business student doing BCom in
Information System Computer Science.
Include Nelson Mandela University South campus which is in Summerstrand Gqeberha
6011 as a site that I’m going to visit for my research.
