Time, Speed and Distance Formulas

Basic Formulas

• Speed = Distance / Time

• Distance = Speed × Time

• Time = Distance / Speed

Unit Conversion

• 1 km/h = 5/18 m/s

• 1 m/s = 18/5 km/h

Relative Speed

• Same Direction: Relative Speed = |a - b|

• Opposite Direction: Relative Speed = a + b

Time to Meet

• Opposite Direction: Time = Distance / Sum of Speeds

• Same Direction: Time = Distance Gap / Difference of Speeds

Average Speed

• Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

• For equal distances: Average Speed = 2ab / (a + b)

Train Problems
• Crossing Pole/Man: Time = Length of Train / Speed

• Crossing Platform: Time = (Train Length + Platform Length) / Speed

• Two Trains Opposite Direction: Time = Sum of Lengths / Sum of Speeds

• Two Trains Same Direction: Time = Sum of Lengths / Difference of Speeds

Boats and Streams

• Downstream Speed = Boat Speed + Stream Speed

• Upstream Speed = Boat Speed - Stream Speed

• Boat Speed = (Downstream + Upstream) / 2

• Stream Speed = (Downstream - Upstream) / 2

Circular Track

• Opposite Directions: Time to Meet = Track Length / Sum of Speeds

• Same Direction: Time to Overtake = Track Length / Difference of Speeds

Percentage Change in Speed

• If speed increases by x%, New Time = 100/(100+x) × Original Time

• If speed decreases by x%, New Time = 100/(100-x) × Original Time
