Abstract

Indoor air quality is a critical determinant of public health, yet educational

institutions frequently lack localized, real-time hardware systems to monitor
pollutants. In sectors like education, classrooms operate under high occupancy,
making them susceptible to poor ventilation, accumulating allergens, and
harmful gases, which can lead to respiratory illnesses and decreased academic
concentration. Traditional monitoring systems are often prohibitively expensive
and rely heavily on continuous internet connectivity and cloud architectures.
This study focuses on optimizing environmental monitoring by developing
"AirCare EDU," a decentralized, IoT-based prototype utilizing an ESP32
microcontroller, MQ135 gas sensor, and DHT11 climate sensor. The goal is to
achieve an independent, low-cost design (approximately ₹820) while
maintaining highly responsive real-time data visualization through an integrated
I2C LCD display. A refined, optimized hardware design is proposed, followed
by prototype testing and validation under various simulated air quality
conditions, ensuring proactive health management aligned with UN Sustainable
Development Goals 3 and 11.
