The letter discusses the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on cognitive processes, particularly focusing on cognitive off-loading and its effects on synaptic effort distribution and neural functioning. It highlights that AI interactions can modify neural effort without necessarily leading to cognitive decline, suggesting a need for monitoring neurometabolic stress signatures. The authors advocate for a deeper understanding of how AI influences cognitive tasks and the associated neuroplastic adaptations.

NeuroAI-driven cognitive off-loading and synaptic effort

recalibration
Syeda Tayyaba Batoola, Umair Alib, Raghabendra Kumar Mahato, MBBSc,*

Abstract
The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) introduces measurable shifts in synaptic effort distribution, hippocampo
prefrontal retrieval load, and microglial cytokine oscillation secondary to task-based neural idling. Latest evidence places
cognitive off-loading to AI as a network-modifying exposure rather than a cognition-reducing endpoint. Early mechanistic and
interventional signals endorse monitoring of neurometabolic stress signatures while emphasizing modifiable digital-interaction
windows that preserve endogenous neuroplastic adaptation.
