THE BRIDGE BETWEEN US

A One-Act Drama

Written by Claude

SCENE 1: THE STUDY

Late afternoon. A study in an old mansion. Heavy oak furniture, photographs on walls, and dust
dancing in the sunlight. THOMAS sits behind a desk, staring at a letter. His face is weathered, eyes
tired. Footsteps approach.

MARGARET
(entering hesitantly) I didn't expect you home so early.

THOMAS
(without looking up) Yes, well. Some things demand our immediate attention.

MARGARET notices the letter in his hands. She stops moving.

MARGARET
Is that...?

THOMAS
(finally looking at her) From David. Finally. After seventeen years of silence.

MARGARET's hand trembles slightly. She sits slowly in a chair facing the desk.

MARGARET
What does he say? Is he... Is he alright?

THOMAS
(laughing bitterly) Alright? He's getting married, Margaret. Married to someone we'll never
meet, in a place we'll never visit.

Long pause. The weight of years crashes down between them.

MARGARET
That's wonderful, Thomas. It is. He's happy, and—

THOMAS
(interrupting) Don't. Don't do that. Don't pretend we haven't destroyed what we had.
SCENE 2: THE CONFRONTATION

Evening. The study. THOMAS paces while MARGARET stands by the window. JAMES enters, dressed
in dark clothes, his expression guarded.

JAMES
I came as soon as I could. Margaret called and said Father needed me. What's happened?

THOMAS
(stopping) Our youngest son is getting married. To a stranger. And we weren't invited.

JAMES
(carefully) Father, you don't know that. He may not have—

THOMAS
I know what the letter says, James. I know what it doesn't say. There's no invitation. No request
for forgiveness. No acknowledgment that we exist.

JAMES moves to MARGARET, who looks away from the window. He takes her hand.

JAMES
Mother, did you know about this?

MARGARET
(quietly) Only what your father has told me. The letter arrived this afternoon.

JAMES
(turning to THOMAS) When did he leave? Seventeen years ago?

THOMAS
You know when. You were here. You remember what he said.

JAMES releases MARGARET and faces his father, years of pain and resentment suddenly visible in his
eyes.

JAMES
(quietly, intensely) Yes, I remember. He said he couldn't be who you wanted him to be. He said
his true self would destroy this family, so he was leaving to save us the pain. And then you told
him never to contact us again.
SCENE 3: THE TRUTH EMERGES

THOMAS stares at his son, then turns away. MARGARET sits, realizing what's coming.

THOMAS
(voice breaking) That boy was defiant. He threw away everything—his future, his name, his
family.

MARGARET
(standing) No. Stop, Thomas. That's not what happened.

Both men turn to look at her, shocked.

MARGARET
(continuing, her voice steady) That boy came to you with honesty, with courage, and you
couldn't bear it. You told him you would sooner see him dead than—than accept who he was.

THOMAS
(sharply) Enough.

MARGARET
Not enough. Not nearly enough. Not after all these years of pretending we don't have a son. Of
avoiding his name. Of letting James bear the guilt of being the 'good one' while David was
made into a ghost.

JAMES sits heavily, emotion overwhelming him. THOMAS sinks into his chair.

MARGARET
(softly) David didn't break this family. We did. His only crime was asking us to love him.
SCENE 4: THE LETTER

THOMAS slowly picks up the letter with trembling hands. He reads it aloud, his voice barely audible.

THOMAS
(reading) "Dear Father and Mother, and James if you're there... I hope this letter finds you in a
place where you might hear me. I never stopped loving you, not for one moment of all these
years."

MARGARET puts her hand on THOMAS's shoulder. He continues.

THOMAS
"I married Michael because I finally found someone who sees me. Not the boy you wanted. Not
the disappointment you anticipated. But me. Fully. Truly. And I'm happier than I ever thought
possible."

JAMES wipes his eyes.

THOMAS
"I'm not asking for forgiveness. I'm simply telling you: I forgive you. I understand you were
frightened. I understand you loved me the only way you knew how. And I'm choosing not to
carry that pain into my marriage. I'm choosing to be free."

Long silence. THOMAS's hands fall to his lap.

MARGARET
(gently) What else does he say?

THOMAS
(reading quietly) "If you want to know me—the real me—I'm here. My number is below. But I
won't wait forever. Life is too short, and I've already wasted too much of it."

(reading) "Your son, David."

SCENE 5: THE CHOICE

The three of them sit in silence for a long time. Outside, night has fallen completely. The room feels
smaller, more intimate, full of possibility and danger.

JAMES
(finally) I've been carrying the weight of his absence for seventeen years. I've let it define who I
became. I won't do it anymore.

He picks up the letter from his father's hands and reads the phone number.

JAMES
(standing) I'm calling him. Tonight. I'm telling my brother I love him, and I'm telling him I want to
meet his husband.

THOMAS looks up at his son, then at his wife, then back at the letter. His face crumbles.

THOMAS
(barely audible) I've been such a fool.

MARGARET
(kneeling beside him) Yes. But you can stop being one. Right now. In this moment.

THOMAS slowly reaches for the letter again. His hand shakes.

THOMAS
(to JAMES) Wait. Don't call yet. I... I want to be part of this. I want to call him. I want to tell
him...

He stops, unable to finish the sentence.

MARGARET
You want to tell him that you're sorry. That you love him. That you were wrong.

THOMAS nods, tears finally spilling down his weathered cheeks.

SCENE 6: NEW BEGINNINGS

JAMES dials the number and hands the phone to his father. MARGARET stands beside THOMAS, her
hand on his shoulder. THOMAS takes a deep breath.

THOMAS
(into the phone) David? It's... it's your father.

Pause. Tears stream down THOMAS's face.

THOMAS
(voice breaking) I received your letter. And I... I've realized what I've done. What I've lost.

Another long pause. JAMES puts his arm around his father's shoulders.

THOMAS
(continuing) I'm sorry, son. I'm so terribly sorry. I was wrong. About everything. And I would
very much like to know you. And to meet Michael. And to... to try to be the father you deserved.

MARGARET closes her eyes, relief washing over her face. Outside, a new day is dawning.

THOMAS
(into the phone) Yes. Yes, I would like that very much. We all would.

The light on stage shifts, softening everything. There's a sense of healing beginning, of bridges being
rebuilt. The family stands together, finally whole.
