Class 10 Mathematics - Chapter 2: Polynomials
A polynomial in one variable x is an algebraic expression of the form: a■ + a■x + a■x² + ... + a■x■, where n is a
non-negative integer.
1. Types of Polynomials
Type Degree Example
Constant Polynomial 0 5
Linear Polynomial 1 x+3
Quadratic Polynomial 2 x² + 2x + 1
Cubic Polynomial 3 x³ + 4x + 2
2. Zeroes of a Polynomial
A zero of a polynomial is a value of the variable that makes the polynomial equal to zero.
Example: For p(x) = x² − 5x + 6
p(2) = 0 and p(3) = 0
Therefore, 2 and 3 are the zeroes of the polynomial.
3. Relationship Between Zeroes and Coefficients
For a quadratic polynomial ax² + bx + c:
Sum of zeroes = −b/a
Product of zeroes = c/a
Example: x² − 7x + 10
a = 1, b = −7, c = 10
Sum of zeroes = −(−7)/1 = 7
Product of zeroes = 10/1 = 10
4. Division Algorithm for Polynomials
If p(x) and g(x) are two polynomials and g(x) ≠ 0, then:
p(x) = g(x) × q(x) + r(x)
where:
• p(x) = Dividend
• g(x) = Divisor
• q(x) = Quotient
• r(x) = Remainder
5. Important Formulas
• a² − b² = (a − b)(a + b)
• (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
• (a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b²
• x² + (a+b)x + ab = (x+a)(x+b)
6. Exam Tips
• Always check the degree of the polynomial.
• Learn formulas carefully.
• Practice factorization questions daily.
• Verify zeroes by substituting values.
• Revise NCERT examples and exercises.
