MODULE 1: HEALTH AND NUTRITION PROGRAMS
1. WORKING WITH PEOPLE IN NUTRITION PROGRAMS
Interaction with communities through nutrition initiatives mainly aims at educating individuals
about the importance of maintaining a well-balanced and healthy diet. NSS volunteers play an
important role in spreading awareness about essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins,
vitamins, and minerals that are necessary for proper growth and overall well-being.
Volunteers work in coordination with local health workers, Anganwadi centers, and
government bodies to organize nutrition awareness camps. In these programs, they demonstrate
simple, cost-effective ways of preparing nutritious meals using locally available ingredients.
Special attention is given to vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and elderly
people, as they are more prone to nutritional deficiencies. Volunteers also conduct door-to-
door visits to educate families about the causes and prevention of malnutrition.
Additionally, the concept of kitchen gardening is promoted, encouraging households to grow
fruits and vegetables at home. This ensures better food quality and easy availability of
nutritious produce.
2. PROVISION OF SAFE AND CLEAN DRINKING WATER
Availability of safe drinking water is essential for preventing diseases and ensuring good public
health. NSS volunteers actively spread awareness about the importance of consuming clean
water and maintaining hygiene practices.
Awareness activities include educating people about basic purification techniques such as
boiling, filtration, and the use of disinfectants like chlorine. Volunteers also guide communities
on proper storage methods, including using covered containers and safe handling practices to
avoid contamination.
In rural and semi-urban areas, volunteers participate in cleaning and maintaining water sources
like wells, ponds, and tanks. They also support local authorities in implementing water supply
and sanitation programs.
Moreover, importance is given to sanitation practices such as proper waste disposal, use of
toilets, and maintaining cleanliness, which helps in reducing disease transmission

3. HEALTH EDUCATION AND PRELIMINARY HEALTH CARE
Health education forms a vital part of NSS activities, helping individuals understand how to
maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent illnesses. Volunteers organize camps, seminars, and
workshops to promote awareness about hygiene, sanitation, and disease prevention.
These programs cover key topics such as personal hygiene, proper handwashing, waste
management, and the significance of immunization. Volunteers also educate people about
common diseases, their symptoms, and the importance of timely medical consultation.
Preliminary healthcare involves providing basic medical support and first aid during
emergencies. NSS volunteers are trained in essential first aid techniques, enabling them to
respond effectively to minor injuries until professional medical help is available.
They also assist doctors and healthcare professionals during medical camps by managing
patient registration, guiding individuals, distributing medicines, and maintaining records. This
provides both community benefits and practical learning for students.1

MODULE 2: FAMILY WELFARE PROGRAMS
1. FAMILY WELFARE PROGRAMS
Family welfare programs are a key component of NSS, focusing on improving the quality of
life of individuals and families. These programs aim to create awareness about health, hygiene,
disease prevention, and the importance of adopting healthy habits.
NSS volunteers actively organize and support such initiatives to ensure that essential healthcare
knowledge and services reach rural and underprivileged communities. These efforts help
bridge the gap between healthcare systems and the public.
Family welfare also emphasizes mental and social well-being in addition to physical health.
Volunteers encourage individuals to maintain cleanliness, adopt healthy practices, and seek
medical help when required, thereby promoting a healthier society.
2. AIDS AWARENESS AND PRELIMINARY HEALTH CARE
NSS volunteers play a significant role in spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS, a disease that
weakens the immune system. They educate people about its causes, modes of transmission,
symptoms, and preventive measures.
Various activities such as rallies, poster campaigns, and group discussions are conducted to
provide accurate information and remove misconceptions and stigma associated with the
disease. Volunteers also promote safe practices, regular health check-ups, and early diagnosis.
Along with awareness, volunteers are trained in basic first aid and preliminary healthcare,
enabling them to handle minor injuries and emergencies effectively. They also assist medical
professionals during health camps by coordinating patients and distributing medicines.
3. FREE HEALTH AND EYE CHECK-UP CAMPS
Free health and eye check-up camps are important NSS initiatives aimed at providing basic
healthcare services to people with limited access to medical facilities. These camps are
organized in collaboration with hospitals, NGOs, and healthcare professionals.
General health check-ups such as blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, and physical
examinations are conducted. These services help in early detection of common health problems
and encourage timely treatment, problems and encourage timely treatment.
Eye camps are particularly beneficial, as many people suffer from vision issues but do not seek
7
medical help due to lack of awareness or financial constraints. These camps help identify
conditions like refractive errors, cataracts, and other eye disorders, and provide necessary
advice, treatment, or referrals.
4. ORGANIZING BLOOD DONATION CAMPS AND YOGA
PROGRAMS
Blood donation camps are among the most impactful NSS activities. Blood is essential during
emergencies, surgeries, and treatments, yet shortages are common.
NSS volunteers organize these camps by creating awareness, motivating donors, and
coordinating with hospitals and blood banks. They manage registrations, guide donors, and
ensure hygiene and safety.

fitness, concentration, and stress management. Volunteers conduct regular sessions and
encourage people to adopt yoga as a daily practice.

Social service programs are an essential part of NSS, focusing on helping the needy and
improving societal well-being. These programs enable students to interact with communities
and understand real-world social issues.

initiatives mainly support vulnerable groups such as differently abled individuals, orphaned
children, and elderly people.
2. WORK IN INSTITUTIONS FOR PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY
CHALLENGED
An important aspect of NSS social service involves working with physically and mentally
challenged individuals who require care and support.
Volunteers visit rehabilitation centers, special schools, and care homes to assist and interact
with them. Activities such as games, cultural events, and group interactions are organized to
build confidence and create a positive environment.
They also promote awareness about equality and inclusiveness, encouraging society to treat
such individuals with dignity and respect.
3. Work in Orphanages and Old Age Homes
NSS volunteers actively engage in social service by visiting orphanages and old age homes.
These institutions support children without parental care and elderly individuals lacking family
support.
Volunteers involve children in educational and recreational activities, encouraging their
development. In old age homes, they spend time with senior citizens, offering companionship
and emotional support.
These experiences help students understand the values of compassion and social responsibility.

4. Prevention of Slums through Social Education
Slum areas often face problems like poor sanitation, overcrowding, and lack of basic facilities.
NSS volunteers address these issues through awareness campaigns and community
engagement.

long-term solutions.

materials. Volunteers also demonstrate practical ways to reduce plastic usage in daily life.
2. Rally Programs
