How Classification and Statutory requirements
are linked
• Classification requires valid Convention Certificates
Pt.1 Ch.2 Sec 1.1.9
the Committee requires the applicable Convention Certificates to be issued by a National
Administration, or by LR, or by an IACS Member when so authorized. Safety Management
Certificates in accordance with the provisions of the International Safety Management Code
(ISM Code) may be issued by an organization complying with IMO Resolution A.739(18) and
authorized by the National Authority with which the ship is registered
• Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requires Classification
SOLAS ChII-1, Part A-1, Reg. 3-1
ships shall be designed, constructed and maintained in compliance with the structural,
mechanical and electrical requirements of a classification society which is recognized by the
Administration in accordance with the provisions of regulation XI-1/1, or with applicable
national standards of the Administration which provide an equivalent level of safety.
