Let’s Understand
There are three ways in connecting yourself in the information or text you
viewed or read.

Sharing your experiences or giving information can be done in many

ways. There are different approaches in sharing your experiences and
information.
1. Listening and reading an article or text, take down relevant notes.

2. Problem-Solution relationship: is the act of finding a solution to the problem.
Example: In every story, you will find out that a character has a
problem that needs to be fixed.

3. Conducting short research projects: this is the process of getting

knowledge through examination of different aspects of a topic/story.

A Vacation to Remember
Vacation is a word that brings joy to everyone, but it means different things to
different people. For some, it would mean strolling at the mall or traveling to tourist
destinations here or abroad. For others, it is the time for visiting grandma’s place or
simply lazing around. For me it means reading books, watching movies, cultivating
new hobbies, and playing.
At the beginning of my vacation from school, all I did was sleep. Then I
decided to do my holiday homework. Then I began reading the Harry Potter books.
My parents took me to Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

 We had great fun there. There were rides that completely frightened me and
took my breath away, but I still enjoyed them. Just when we thought of returning it
began to rain. We got wet. How was the day? It was simply splendid.

Let’s Analyze
A. Directions: Read the article about the challenges that astronauts face
each day and be aware of the vocabulary words below. Observe standards
in silent reading, then answer the questions that follow.

 Wrench- sudden violent twist or pull
 Obstacle- a thing that blocks one’s way, prevents, or hinders progress
 Adhesive-any substance that can hold materials together
Space Challenge
Astronauts face many challenges in space
caused by weightlessness. One of these
obstacles is floating around the cabin. To solve
this problem, astronauts wear shoes that are
coated with a special adhesive. This adhesive
sticks to the floor of the cabin. Serving food is
another problem. It will not stay put on the table!
To combat this problem, food is carefully
contained in pouches and drinks are packaged as dehydrated powders. The
astronauts add water to beverages through a special tube before drinking.
Weightlessness also causes problems when an
astronaut tries to work. The simple task of turning a wrench or a doorknob can be
difficult. Since there is no gravity to keep him down, when he exerts a force
in one direction, the opposite force may flip him over completely. To resolve this
challenge, he must be very careful about how much force he uses to do these simple
tasks. Here on earth, life is simpler and easier, thanks to gravity.

B. Directions: Read the story passage and make two connections between

world.
Lost and Found
Joseph was a lovely boy but he had a big problem. Joseph was always
forgetting things! Every day it was the same problem. On Monday he forgot his
homework so he got in trouble from his teacher. On Tuesday he forgot his school
bag so had to carry all his things around in a plastic bag. On Wednesday he forgot
his PE uniform so he had to miss out on his PE class at school. On Thursday he forgot
his shoes so he had to go to spend all day in bare feet, which of course caused all
the other kids at school to laugh at him. On Friday he forgot his permission slip to
join the Boy scout activity, so he had to stay back and help the principal do jobs.
Joseph decided it was time to make a change. He was sick and tired of always
forgetting things and getting into trouble and missing out on all the fun. He started
writing notes and sticking them on his study table every day as soon as he got
home from school, with all the things he needed to remember for the next day.
Each morning he checked the list and made sure he had everything he needed.
It worked! From that day forward Joseph never forgot anything again. Until next
Friday, of course, when he forgot to write on the notes!

Directions: Read the Folktale entitled the Mango Tree. Browse the selection to
fill in the problem-solution outline activity below.
There once was a beautiful mango tree that grew in the
jungle near a village. Each and every year when its fruit was
in season, the children from the village would run into the
jungle and harvest its delicious fruit.
However, one day when the children went to the tree, they
were surprised to find a fence encircling the popular tree.
Inside the perimeter of the fence were two mean looking
dogs that watched warily their every move. A stranger who
the children had not seen before came out of the jungle and
approached them. “Get out of here!” the stranger shouted. “This tree belongs to me
now!” “No, it doesn't!” The children cried. “You don’t own the jungle! This tree belongs
to everyone. Anyone can pick fruit from this tree!”
The children were right. They were telling the truth, but the stranger paid no attention
to them. He made his dogs chase the children who retreated to the village from
whence they came. Upon returning, the children went immediately to the village
headman. They told him about the stranger and about what happened. The village
headman was very wise and very clever. After some time, he came up with an idea.

She threw two morsels of meat to the dogs and climbed over the fence. She then took
a mango from the tree and began eating. Again, the stranger ran over from the
jungle and into the clearing.
Stop!” He shouted. “You cannot take my mangoes! Go away!”
Ignoring the stranger, the girl took another bite from the mango. Suddenly she
screamed out loud and fell to the ground and lay still. At that moment, the headman
came by and walked up to the stranger.
“What have you done to this poor girl?” The headman asked him.
“Nothing!” The stranger replied. “She took one of my mangoes and fell to the ground."
The headman knelt before the girl and felt her forehead. “I’m afraid she has mango
sickness,” the headman said shaking his head. “You see, once every ten years,
poisonous mangoes will grow from this tree…You must not eat any mangoes from this
tree this year.” The headman then picked up the girl and carried her back to the
village.
The next morning, the children from the village followed the headman into the jungle
to the mango tree. Looking around, they saw that the stranger was gone and took
with him the fence along with his two fearsome dogs.
Once again, the children began climbing up the mango tree to harvest its delicious
fruit. When they returned to their village, the children laughed and sang songs in their
happiness while carrying their mangoes. They shared their bounty with everyone.
