Beyond the walls of the traditional classroom, accounting is undergoing a
transformation. Based to the webinar I watched, "Journey Beyond the
Ledger - Stories from Classroom to Workplace," this is what it entails. It's a
journey that illuminates the intriguing stories of growth, challenges. and
transformation as the ledger turns from a simple list of numbers to an
opening to knowledge. Remarkable speakers imparted insightful
knowledge on their formative academic years, the characteristics of a
competent accountant, and how to apply these lessons to my own journey
as an aspiring accountant.
Based on their personal experiences, they have faced many obstacles that
have shaped them into an accomplished accountants they are today.
Indeed, the path to mastering accounting is fraught with challenges. The
speakers highlighted the demanding nature of accountancy studies, where
students must balance a heavy workload of coursework, assignments, and
extracurricular activities. As an accountancy student myself, I can
empathize with this challenge. Juggling multiple deadlines, gearing up for
exams, series of quizzes and maintaining a healthy personal life can be
overwhelming at times . On numerous occasions, I've found myself
stretched to the limit, trying to distribute my time effectively across all
these demanding responsibilities. There are instances when sleep
becomes a luxury as we delve deeper into our studies to fully understand
the intricate concepts and lessons . Another challenge that comes with
being a college student is the need to double our studying efforts because
we need to strive harder for us to survive this course given that we have
retention policies that we adhere to. We often find ourselves in extensive
self –study and independent learning since the teaching is fast paced. We
must take the initiative to review course materials, practice problem-
solving, and seek supplemental resources to enhance our understanding.
Reason why I may find it difficult to stay motivated and disciplined in my
self-study efforts. This is significantly different from what I was used to
before my early school years. At this point, I understood that chances of
surviving depend on our own diligence and willpower. This has often left
me feeling overwhelmed, struggling to keep up with the many lessons and
feeling somewhat inferior to my more intellectually advanced peers.
Aside from the challenges, the webinar also delved into the qualifications
and skill sets required to become a competent accountant. What really
makes a good accountant? A good accountant possesses qualities such
as integrity, discipline, competence, accountability, confidence, openness,
attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous learning. They uphold
high ethical standards, are organized and meet deadlines, have a strong
understanding of accounting principles, take accountable of their work,
communicate effectively, embrace new ideas, pay close attention to
detail, and stay updated on industry trends. By embodying these qualities,
accountants can effectively fulfill their role and contribute to the success
of their organization. Accountants should have confidence in their abilities
and decisions. They must be able to communicate effectively and provide
sound financial advice. The webinar served as a valuable reminder of the
qualities necessary for success in the accounting profession. It prompted
me to reflect on my own areas for growth and improvement. As I
considered the characteristics discussed, I realized that I have room to
enhance my confidence and communication skills. While technical
expertise is crucial, I am fully aware of the importance of developing my
soft skills as well. Hearing insights from seasoned professionals provided
me with a broader and more holistic understanding of the challenges and
opportunities I will encounter in the actual work setting. This
understanding was further reinforced during my internship, where I
became acutely aware of my weaknesses in communication and
confidence. I recognize that without these qualities, I may not yet be fully
qualified to excel as a competent accountant. It is clear that these
attributes are essential for standing out and making a meaningful impact
in the field. This realization has spurred me on to actively work on
improving these areas, as I strive to become a well-rounded and
accomplished accountant.
Another facet of the session, is the lessons that gained. Getting ready to
fail and aim higher are the phrases that resonated me deeply. The phrase
"get ready to fail" holds a profound meaning in my journey as an
accountancy student. Initially, the idea of failure may seem discouraging,
but I have come to understand that it is an inevitable part of the learning
process. Embracing the possibility of failure has taught me resilience,
perseverance, and the importance of learning from mistakes.
Difficult exams, complex concepts, and demanding coursework have
tested my limits. However, the lesson of "getting ready to fail" has taught
me not to fear these obstacles, but rather to view them as opportunities
for growth. Each failure has become a stepping stone towards
