a. Based in the video clips, what did you learn about social innovation?

Social innovation is the creation of solutions to current social issues. It is an

innovation that focuses more on solving the daily struggles of communities (e.g.,
farming adversity, water shortage, nutritional deficiency, etc.) to a long-term extent.
During this process, involvement with the community is crucial, as only then can
designers understand the problems that they face. It is a collaborative process involving
the ideas of the parties involved. The inputs of the beneficiaries, in particular, are of
paramount importance as the innovation revolves around them; ultimately, the goal of
social innovation is to solve the problems they face.
Data-gathering through surveys and interviews are applicable methodologies that
can be employed by designers to deepen their understanding of the issues faced by the
community. These methodologies bring broad data collection and exploration to
uncharted experiences that are otherwise ignored. It is pivotal that the designer be
knowledgeable of the living conditions of the community to iron out their design process
and gravitate it to the needs of the people.
Further, the beneficiaries must be thoroughly involved in the design process so that
the end product would be aligned with their lifestyle. Social innovation is a powerful tool
in easing the lives of those less opportune. By aligning the design process to the
lifestyle and insights of the beneficiaries, the designers generate solutions that are not
just effective but deeply rooted in the community’s way of life.
