Tutorial 7

This tutorial document outlines the tasks for Materials & Design (ME2200) with a submission deadline of May 5, 2026. It includes problems related to fatigue failure in cylindrical pressure vessels, stress analysis in engineering components, fracture toughness in aluminum alloys, flaw detection in steel alloys, and stress concentration at crack tips. Additionally, there is an optional experimental task involving paper strips to predict failure locations under tension.

Materials & Design (ME2200)

Tutorial 7
Submission Deadline: 5-May -2026
Instructions
• Assume suitable data wherever required and provide justification .
• Some of the data needed was provided in Tutorial 6.
• Answer all questions.
1. ( 2 marks) A cylindrical pressure vessel with closed ends is of inner diameter 250 mm and
wall thickness 2.5 mm. It is made from Ti -6Al -4V.
a. Neglecting any stress concentrations, what is the applied maximum pressure which
5
may result in fatigue failure at 1 x 10 cycles?
b. What is the safety factor against yielding for the applied maximum pressure in (a)?
2. (4 marks ) At a location of interest in an engineering component, the material is repeatedly
subjected to the uniaxial stress history shown in the figure below. The component is made of
RQC -100 steel. Estimate the number of repetitions to cause fatigue failure .

3. (1 Marks ) Suppose that a wing component on an aircraft is fabricated from an aluminum

alloy that has a plane strain fracture toughness of 26 MPa√m. It has been determined that
fracture occurs at a stress of 112 MPa when the maximum internal crack length is 8.6 mm.
For this same component and alloy, compute the stress level at which fracture will occur for
a critical internal crack length of 6.0 mm.
4. (1 marks ) A structural component in the form of a wide plate is to be fabricated from a
steel alloy that has a plane strain fracture toughness of 98.9 MPa√m and a yield strength of
860 MPa. The flaw size resolution limit of the flaw detection apparatus is 3.0mm. If the design
stress is one-half the yield strength and the geometric factor β = 1.0, determine whether a
critical flaw in this plate is detectable .
5. (2 marks ) What is the magnitude of the maximum stress that exists at the tip of an internal
crack having a radius of curvature of 1.9 x 10 -4 mm and a crack length of 3.8 x 10 -2 mm when a
tensile stress of 140 MPa is applied?
6. (Optional) Cut a strip of paper 10 cm wide. With a knife, cut a center crack (slit) of length 2a =
3.75 cm in the top half. In the bottom half, cut two edge cracks with a = 1.5 cm. Predict where
the strip will fail in tension. Confirm your answer by rollin g the ends of the paper around pencils
and by pulling. Show the images of the experiment and discuss your results.
