P1502 TUTORIAL 1 2025/2026
1. The weather outside is frightful. The temperature is -26 °F. What is the corresponding
temperature in the Celsius and Kelvin scale? At what temperature are the Celsius
temperature and the Fahrenheit temperature the same?
2. You put a bottle of soft drink in a refrigerator and leave it until its temperature has
dropped 10.0 K. What is its temperature change in (a) °C and (b) °F?
3. The coefficient of linear expansion of lead is 29 x 10-6 K-1. What change in temperature
will cause a 5m long lead bar to change in length by 3.0 mm?
4. A square hole 8.00cm along each side is cut in a sheet of copper (α=17 × 10−6 /𝐾). (a)
Calculate the change in the area of this hole if the temperature of the sheet is increased by
50.0K. Does this change represent an increase or a decrease in the area enclosed by the
hole?
5. A 20.0 g copper ring at 0.000 °C has an inner diameter of D=2.54000 cm. An Al sphere at
100.0 °C has a diameter diameter of d= 2.54508 cm. The sphere is placed on top of the
ring and the two are allowed to come to thermal equilibrium, with no heat lost to the
surroundings. The sphere just passes through the ring at the equilibrium temperature.
What is the mass of the sphere?
6. An aluminium can is filled to the brim with a liquid. The can and the liquid are heated so
their temperatures change by the same amount. The can’s initial volume at 15 ºC is
4.5×10-4 m3. The coefficient of volume expansion for aluminium is 69×10-6 ºC-1. When
the can and the liquid are heated to 75 ºC, 2.9×10-6 m3 of liquid spills over. What is the
coefficient of volume expansion of the liquid?
7. A hollow aluminium cylinder 20.0cm deep has an internal capacity of 2.000L at 20.0°C.
It is completely filled with turpentine ( 9.0 10 4 / 0 C ) and then slowly warmed to
80.0°C. (a) How much turpentine overflows? (b) If the cylinder is then cooled back to
20.0°C, how far below the cylinder’s rim does the turpentine’s surface recede?
