Abstract

The surge of e-commerce in India has revolutionized retail transactions but has also
introduced challenges related to consumer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning return and
refund processes. This analytical study examines the causes behind consumer dissatisfaction
and rejection of return policies on leading Indian e-commerce platforms. The research
follows a descriptive and analytical design, using both primary data and secondary sources
such as reports and academic literature.
Findings highlight that procedural complexity, delay in refunds, and inadequate customer
service are the primary drivers of dissatisfaction. Consumers often view return policies as
ambiguous and seller-biased, reducing their confidence in online transactions. The study
emphasizes the need for e-commerce companies to simplify return procedures, enhance
refund efficiency, and ensure transparent communication to restore customer trust.
This research provides managerial insights for online retailers and policymakers to strengthen
consumer protection frameworks and improve satisfaction levels. It further suggests that
consumer-centric return policies can enhance brand reputation and competitive advantage in
India’s rapidly evolving digital marketplace.
