STA2023ProjectModule5 2

The document presents a statistical analysis using T-tests to evaluate hypotheses regarding the tenure of senators and the age comparison between the Senate and House of Representatives. In both cases, the null hypotheses were not rejected due to high p-values (0.714 and 0.349), indicating insufficient evidence to support the claims. The analysis involved random sampling and calculations of standard error and degrees of freedom.

Chapter 5: Inference for Numerical Data
1.
a. T-test

b. The conditions are as follows,

n = 15 which satisfies the CLT theorem that isn’t measured by size alone,
senators were randomly selected from the 118th congress for sampling and, the sample
was less than 3% of the total 531 members’ total.

c. H 0: μ = 12 H A : μ > 12

d. x = 11 μ = 12 n = 15 s=¿ 6.697548
SE = s/(√n) = 6.697548/ (√ 15) = 1.7293
degrees of freedom = n -1 = 15 – 1 = 14
t = ( x – μ)/ SE = (11 – 12)/ 1.7293 = - 0.578
ρ-value is 0.714

e. Since the ρ-value (0.714) > 0.05 alpha level, we fail to reject the null hypothesis ( H 0: μ
= 12).

f. The statistical evidence is insufficient to support the claim that the members of the senate
have been serving for more than 12 years (2 terms).

2.
a. T-test

b. The conditions are as follows,

n ≥30 which satisfies the CLT theorem,
members were randomly selected from the 118th congress for sampling and,
the sample group of senate and house of representatives were independent of each other.

c. H 0: μs = μh H A : μs > μh

d. x = 11 ns = 15 s=¿ 6.697548 x = 10.13333 nh = 15

s=¿ 5.208052
SE = √ s2/n = ((√6.69758 2/15) + (√5.2080522/15)) = 2.1906
degrees of freedom = n -1 = 15 – 1 = 14
t = ( x - x )/ SE = (11 – 10.13333)/ 2.1906 = 0.3956
ρ-value is 0.349

e. Since the ρ-value (0.349) > 0.05 alpha level, we fail to reject the null hypothesis H 0: μs
= μh.
