Question 1 [65 marks]
Use the following guidelines and material properties for Question 1
All structural elements to be designed according to the relevant SANS Standards and Codes of
practice. Any deviations must be clearly stated.
fcu = 25 MPa, fy = 450 MPa, fyv = 450 MPa, 30 mm screed, live load = 2.4 kN/m2
Figure 1 shows the typical layout of the floor of a multi-storey office building. The building is
located in a moderate environment. It is to be constructed using reinforced concrete elements with
a fire resistance of 1.5 hrs. Wind loading is to be resisted by shear walls. Ceilings, services (lighting
& a fire sprinkler system) and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems are
mounted on the soffit (underside) of the slabs.
You have been asked to consider two design options for the floor:
a) one-way slab construction (the typical beam slab arrangement is shown in Figure 2),
b) flat slab construction (the typical column-slab arrangement is shown in Figure 3).
(i) Show on the layout (Figure 1), the best location for shear walls. The shear wall arrangement
should not have adverse effects on the building movement. [4]
(ii) Using the information provided, estimate the effective depth of panel I and hence the total
dead load on the panel assuming: [10]
a) One-way slab construction
b) Flat slab construction
(iii) Estimate the floor to ceiling height for each of the two design options (see Figure 4). [6]
(iv) Considering the flat slab construction and the longer span, provide reinforcement to resist
punching shear around the column slab interface (see Figure 3) of column E2. Consider a
maximum of 3 shear zones. [25]
You have opted to use the yield line method to design the slab:
(v) Determine and sketch the type of supports (i.e., free edge, simple support or continuous
supports) along the edges of panel B and hence, sketch a valid yield line pattern for panel B
(refer to Figure 5) assuming: [10]
a) One-way slab construction
b) Flat slab construction
(vi) Using the Work Method, calculate the design bending moment (m) based on the yield line
pattern from (v) a) for panel B (i.e., assuming a one-way slab construction).
Assume isotropic reinforcement i.e., equal ‘m’ in each direction (for both hogging and
sagging). [10]
