EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report outlines the experience of Mr. Philip Monu Dabone during his practical project.
The practical project took place from January 18 to March 21, 2024, as part of the
requirements for the completion of the Bachelor of Technology in Building Construction at
Ho Technical University. It is compulsory for every student of the department of Building
Technology to undertake the practical industrial experience in different field and
organization. A practical project is a vital prerequisite for obtaining the Bachelor of
Technology certificate at Ho Technical University.

The primary aim of the practical project is to equip the student with the essential skills and
knowledge needed to effectively meet industry demands and excel in the field of
Information Technology upon graduation. This involves gaining practical experience and
exposure to real-world scenarios, providing firsthand insight into professional practices,
and facilitating self-assessment and personal development.

CHAPTER1

Introduction

During the period from January 25th to March 21st, 2024, I embarked on a series of visits
to construction sites as part of the Practical Project 3 course requirement. Over the course
of eight weeks, I had the opportunity to explore and observe the activities at four different
construction sites (Trafalgar New Pharmacy, Tree-story mini supermarket, Renovation of
an existing building to a one-story residential building, construction of a four-story private
hostel) gaining valuable insights into various aspects of construction practices, techniques,
and project management.

The first two weeks of my practical project were spent at a construction site situated near
the TRAFALGAR, approximately 200 meters away from the Trafalgar Hospital. Here, I
encountered a tree-story mini supermarket under construction, with the ground floor
already erected upon my arrival. I was warmly welcomed by Mr. John Kojo, the site
foreman, who provided me with an overview of the ongoing activities and introduced me to
the site workforce. The primary focus of work at this site was on formwork and steel
bending for the first-floor concrete slab, offering me a firsthand glimpse into these essential
construction processes. Mr. John Kojo served as my mentor, providing invaluable
instruction in essential construction techniques. Demonstrating the art of bending
reinforcement rings, measuring 16mm by 10mm for beam construction, Mr. Kojo
showcased precision and expertise in his craft. Additionally, he arranged for a skilled steel
bender to guide me through the process of overlapping beam joints, emphasizing the
critical importance of maintaining a precise distance between bars.

Simultaneously, carpenters engaged in formwork activities, preparing for concrete pouring,


highlighting the collaborative nature of construction projects. Under Mr. Kojo's tutelage, I
gained practical experience and theoretical knowledge, enhancing my understanding of
construction fundamentals.

This hands-on learning experience has equipped me with valuable skills and insights that
will undoubtedly benefit my future endeavours in the construction industry. I am grateful
for Mr. Kojo's guidance and mentorship, which have been instrumental in my professional
development.

In the third week of my practical project, I shifted my attention to the construction of a
pharmacy located on the Trafalgar Campus, near the entrance. Mr. Dzifa, the site foreman,
graciously guided me through the various activities taking place on site, which mirrored
those observed at the previous site. Once again, formwork and reinforcement work for the
first-floor concrete slab dominated the construction landscape, providing me with an
opportunity to deepen my understanding of these fundamental construction techniques. Mr.
Dzifa's guidance as site foreman, I learned about supporting floors with steel members. He
explained that the columns, sized 225mm by 400mm, were arranged differently throughout
the building. The first floor had a thickness of 150mm, while beams were thicker at
450mm. Mr. Dzifa's detailed instruction provided valuable insight into the structural
elements of the site, highlighting the importance of proper support and alignment in
construction projects. His expertise not only expanded my understanding of site operations
but also underscored the significance of careful planning and execution in ensuring
structural integrity and safety.

For the fourth and fifth weeks of my practical project, I ventured to a third site positioned
behind the Trafalgar Hospital, approximately 100 meters from the Trafalgar mortuary. This
site was dedicated to expand and renovate an existing building to a one-story residential
building, where activities such as reinforcement, framework for a staircase, and concrete
casting of the first-floor slab were underway. Mr. Bright Emmanuel, the site foreman,
played a pivotal role as my mentor, sharing his wealth of knowledge and expertise in
construction. He provided comprehensive guidance on the intricacies of staircase
construction, highlighting key components essential for understanding the anatomy of
stairs. From the foundational elements such as the runner, take-off, and landing, to the
structural supports like stringers and newels, Mr. Emmanuel meticulously explained each
component's function and significance in the overall design and functionality of a staircase.
Through his patient instruction and hands-on demonstrations, I gained a deeper
appreciation for the craftsmanship and attention to detail required in constructing safe and
aesthetically pleasing staircases. Mr. Emmanuel's guidance not only enriched my
understanding of construction practices but also inspired me to pursue excellence in my
future endeavours within the field. Mr. Bright Emmanuel, the site foreman, informed us
about the floor casting's mixing ratio, which was 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 3 parts
aggregate. He also mentioned that the mixing process was mechanized for efficiency and
time minimization.

Mr. Bright Emmanuel imparted valuable knowledge to me during our interaction on the
construction site. He provided guidance on the proper usage of the concrete vibrator,
emphasizing the importance of avoiding over-vibration. Through his instruction, I learned
that excessive vibration can lead to segregation of the concrete mixture and loss of water
content, which can have detrimental effects on the integrity and durability of the building.
Mr. Emmanuel underscored the significance of achieving the right balance in vibrating the
concrete to ensure proper compaction without causing undue harm to the mixture. His
insights highlighted the delicate balance required in construction practices, where precision
and attention to detail are paramount. By adhering to his guidance, I gained a deeper
understanding of the nuances involved in concrete placement and compaction techniques,
which will undoubtedly serve me well in my future endeavours in the construction industry

Transitioning into the 5th and Eight weeks of my practical project, I found myself at the
fourth site located in Wotoe, behind the Ho Technical University campus and
approximately 500 meters away from Ho Technical University near the UHAS hostel.
Here, I was introduced to the site foreman Mr. Christian and the site engineer, who
provided me with detailed insights into the construction of a four-story private hostel. The
activities observed during my time at this site encompassed drainage excavation, formwork
for drainage, concrete casting for drainage, block wall laying for fencing, and concrete
casting for the main building's columns. Notably, the substructure work had already been
completed, with preparations underway for the commencement of the superstructure.

Throughout my journey across these diverse construction sites, I gained invaluable hands-
on experience and knowledge, which significantly enriched my understanding of
construction processes, site management, and project execution. This report aims to
document and reflect upon my observations, experiences, and lessons learned during this
immersive practical project endeavour.

The site foreman, Mr. Christian, and the site engineer, Mr. Kuma, who provided detailed
insights into the ongoing activities. They outlined several critical tasks that were underway,
encompassing various aspects of the construction process.

Firstly, excavation work for the drainage system was in progress, with trenches being
excavated to a width of approximately 600mm. These trenches were intricately jointed with
the external fencing walls to ensure structural integrity and seamless integration with the
surrounding landscape.

Next, formwork for the drainage structures was being meticulously crafted by skilled
carpenters, led by Mr. Kofi Poyoyo. The formwork serves as the framework for casting
concrete, ensuring the precise shape and dimensions of the drainage components.

Concrete casting for the drainage system followed, with a meticulous mixing ratio of 1:2:3
being adhered to. This precise blend of cement, sand, and aggregate ensures the optimal
strength and durability of the drainage structures.

Simultaneously, construction activities for the fencing walls were underway, with skilled
masons, including myself and my colleagues, laying concrete blocks to form sturdy and
resilient barriers around the perimeter of the site.

Prior to the casting of the main building's columns, a kicker thickness of 30 by 20 mm was
meticulously applied. This kicker serves to establish alignment and prevent concrete
spillage during the final casting phase. The columns themselves were carefully positioned,
with dimensions of 300 by 200mm, ensuring structural stability and load-bearing capacity.

Furthermore, meticulous cranking of reinforced bars was undertaken to precisely position


them in preparation for concrete casting. This ensures optimal reinforcement and structural
integrity within the columns.

Finally, an inspection chamber was integrated into the main building design, facilitating the
convergence of plumbing systems. This chamber enables comprehensive inspection and
maintenance of the plumbing infrastructure, ensuring seamless functionality and longevity.

2.1 MAIN OBJECTIVES OF SITE VISITS

Construction site visits represent indispensable educational experiences within the domain
of building technology, serving as immersive platforms that augment students'
comprehension of genuine construction practices. These visits play a pivotal role in
creating an interactive learning environment, offering students direct exposure to the
multifaceted dynamics of construction projects unfolding in real-world settings. As a
fundamental component of the curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Technology in Building
Technology, the department has implemented a comprehensive policy aimed at ensuring
students undergo a well-rounded blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training.
This approach aims to furnish students with the requisite skills and competencies to adeptly
manage and supervise construction activities with confidence and proficiency.

Construction site visits are essential components of building technology education, providing
students with invaluable hands-on experiences that complement their theoretical learning.
These visits offer direct exposure to real-world construction projects, allowing students to
observe and engage with professionals actively involved in the industry. Through activities
like carpentry, masonry, and steel bending, students acquire practical skills and problem-
solving abilities crucial for their future careers. Additionally, site visits foster critical thinking
by challenging students to analyse construction processes and propose innovative solutions to
real-world challenges. Despite logistical challenges such as coordination and safety concerns,
educators can enhance learning experiences by incorporating alternative methods. In
summary, construction site visits play a pivotal role in equipping students with the
knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary for success in the dynamic field of building
technology.

2.2 ROUTINE DUTIE

During the course of several weeks, I undertook routine duties involving visits to various
construction sites, each providing unique insights and opportunities for hands-on learning
experiences. On Thursday, February 1st, 2024, my first visit took me to a construction site
located in the vicinity of Trafalgar Hospital. Upon arrival, I had the privilege of meeting the
foreman, who happened to be a skilled carpenter. He graciously shared the working drawings
of a one-story building currently under construction, offering valuable context for the
ongoing project. With his guidance, I embarked on a comprehensive tour of the site, where I
observed the various stages of construction leading up to the current state, marked by the
completion of the first-floor concrete slab.

The site itself was abuzz with activity, featuring an array of materials and equipment essential
for the construction process. Among the notable items were gravel, sand, sand Crete beams,
roof blocks, a water tank, and an assortment of reinforcing iron bars ranging from 12mm to
16mm in diameter. These materials were meticulously organized within designated areas,
including a dedicated tools and materials room stocked with cement and a variety of
construction implements such as wheelbarrows, shovels, and head pans.

Under the guidance of Mr. John Kojo, the foreman, I had the opportunity to interact with the
skilled and diligent workers comprising the construction team. Given the predominant focus
on carpentry and steel bending activities, Mr. John provided a detailed overview of the
carpentry works currently underway. This primarily involved the construction of formworks
for the slab, meticulously assembled using Wawa boards supported by bamboo sticks. Eager
to contribute to the effort, I actively assisted in the transportation and placement of the
boards, actively engaging with the carpenters tasked with their installation.

Transitioning to the steelworks section of the site, I was greeted by the sight of two dedicated
steel benders meticulously crafting reinforcements for the floor beams. The meticulous
attention to detail was evident, with stirrups composed of 12mm bars and main bars

measuring 16mm in diameter. The configuration of the beams, characterized by a cross-
sectional area of 300mm × 200mm and a stirrup spacing of 200mm, underscored the
precision and expertise required in executing such critical components of the construction
process. Eager to immerse myself further, I eagerly participated in rod cutting activities,
lending a hand wherever needed to contribute to the project's progress.

Returning for my second week on Thursday, February 8th, 2024, I found myself once again
at the construction site under the guidance of Mr. John. The familiar sights and sounds of the
bustling worksite greeted me as I eagerly resumed my role in supporting the ongoing
activities. Steel bending and carpentry works remained the primary focus, providing me with
additional opportunities to refine my skills in rod cutting and stirrup binding. With each
passing day, my confidence and competence in executing these tasks grew, bolstered by the
invaluable guidance and mentorship provided by the seasoned professionals overseeing the
project.

In the subsequent weeks, I embarked on visits to additional construction sites, each offering
its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. On February 15th, 2024, I found myself
at another site situated within the Trafalgar Hospital campus, where I had the pleasure of
meeting Mr. Dzifa, the site supervisor. With characteristic enthusiasm, Mr. Dzifa shared the
ambitious plans for the construction of a storey building intended to serve as a pharmacy for
the hospital. As I surveyed the site, I noted the meticulous organization of materials,
including iron rods, Wawa boards, and essential tools housed within the site office.

As the project progressed, I observed the meticulous execution of carpentry and steel bending
works, with a particular emphasis on beam reinforcement for the floor slab. The meticulous
attention to detail demonstrated by the construction team served as a testament to their
commitment to quality and excellence. Eager to contribute to the effort, I eagerly participated
in various activities, ranging from carrying iron rods to assisting in the cleanup efforts to
ensure a safe and efficient working environment.

Continuing my journey of exploration, I ventured to a third construction site located at the


rear of Trafalgar Hospital, adjacent to the Trafalgar mortuary, on February 22nd, 2024. Here,
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bright Emmanuel, the site Forman and Engineer, who
provided valuable insights into the construction of a residential building intended to
accommodate hospital workers and student. As I surveyed the site, I was struck by the
coordinated efforts of the construction team, who worked tirelessly to advance the project
towards completion.

In the sixth and seventh weeks of my practical project, I engaged in various construction
activities at the fourth site, situated in Wotoe near Ho Technical University. Under the
supervision of the site foreman, Mr. Christian, and the site engineer, Mr. Kuma, I contributed
to the construction of a four-story private hostel.

My routine duties included overseeing drainage excavation, formwork fabrication, concrete


casting, block wall construction, and column reinforcement. I assisted in excavating trenches

with a width of approximately 600mm, ensuring precise alignment and depth for the drainage
system. Additionally, I participated in crafting formwork, adhering to strict dimensions and
specifications to facilitate accurate concrete placement.

Concrete casting was performed with a meticulous mix ratio of 1:2:3, ensuring optimal
strength and durability of the drainage structures. Collaborating with skilled masons, I laid
concrete blocks for fencing walls, employing proper bonding techniques for structural
integrity. Furthermore, I contributed to positioning reinforced bars and applying kicker
thickness to columns, enhancing their load-bearing capacity and alignment.

Integrating an inspection chamber into the building design facilitated plumbing convergence,
allowing for comprehensive maintenance access. Overall, my duties encompassed critical
tasks vital for successful construction project execution.

With each visit, I found myself increasingly engaged and invested in the construction
process, eager to contribute in any way possible. Whether assisting with formwork
installations, reinforcing columns, or participating in concrete casting activities, I embraced
each task with enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence. As I reflect on my experiences, I
am grateful for the opportunity to have played a small role in the realization of these
ambitious construction projects, each serving as a testament to the power of collaboration,
dedication, and craftsmanship in shaping the world around us.

EVALUATION OF ACTIVITIES DURING SITE VISITS.

3.1. Success/ Failure of site visits

During my eight-week tenure of site visits, I encountered a diverse array of activities


encompassing carpentry works, steel bending, block laying, concreting, and trench
excavation, each revealing a spectrum of successes and failures in their execution.

The punctuality and dedication exhibited by the workers emerged as a cornerstone of project
success. Their unwavering commitment to achieving optimal results often manifested in the
willingness to work night shifts to meet project deadlines. Furthermore, the availability of
well-maintained equipment significantly expedited the pace of work, facilitating efficient
progress across various tasks. The adherence to established procedures and techniques,
meticulously overseen by site supervisors and foremen, yielded commendable outcomes,
including structurally sound walls, columns, and beams devoid of defects. Additionally, the
utilization of high-quality materials, such as chemically-free sand, uniformly graded gravels,
and well-preserved iron rods, ensured the integrity and longevity of the constructed elements.

3.2. Challenges

However, amidst the achievements, certain shortcomings were noted that posed challenges to
project efficacy and worker safety. Foremost among these concerns was the lax adherence to
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols by some workers, potentially exposing them
to grave risks of injury. Furthermore, the absence of designated platforms for manual and
mortar mixing resulted in the practice of mixing directly on the bare ground, increasing the
likelihood of impurities contaminating the mortar mixture. The lack of essential safety
measures, including first aid boxes and dedicated safety officers on-site, further compounded
safety risks, leaving workers vulnerable in the event of accidents or injuries.

In essence, while notable successes were achieved through diligent workmanship and
adherence to established protocols, addressing the identified deficiencies is imperative to
ensure the continued safety and efficacy of construction projects. Through proactive
measures aimed at enhancing safety protocols, fostering a culture of compliance with PPE
requirements, and investing in essential safety infrastructure, construction sites can mitigate
risks and uphold standards of excellence in project execution.

During my site visits, a significant challenge that repeatedly surfaced was the unavailability
of water, which posed a considerable impediment to the progress of construction works. The
absence of a consistent water supply hindered various tasks and often led to delays in project
timelines. Similarly, inadequate electricity supply emerged as another formidable challenge
on certain sites, necessitating the implementation of shifts and nocturnal work schedules to
compensate for the shortfall.

3.3. Solving problems

Addressing these challenges requires proactive measures aimed at enhancing the


infrastructure and utilities available on-site. To mitigate the issue of water scarcity, the
installation of boreholes represents a viable solution, ensuring a reliable and continuous water
supply for construction activities. By tapping into underground water sources, boreholes can
alleviate dependence on external water sources and circumvent disruptions caused by erratic
supply.

Furthermore, to address the issue of inadequate electricity supply, the installation of


electricity poles and cables is imperative to bolster the power infrastructure on-site. By
extending the electrical grid to the construction site and ensuring seamless connectivity,
workers can benefit from uninterrupted access to electricity, facilitating round-the-clock
operations and minimizing reliance on temporary solutions such as generators or intermittent
power sources.

In essence, proactive measures aimed at enhancing water and electricity infrastructure are
essential to overcoming the challenges posed by their unavailability on construction sites.
Through the installation of boreholes and the extension of electricity grids, construction
projects can proceed unhindered by utility constraints, ensuring optimal progress and timely

4.1. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, my eight-week immersion in site visits has been an enriching journey of


practical learning, providing me with invaluable hands-on experience and management
insights essential for navigating construction projects. Through active participation in
diverse activities like carpentry, steel bending, and concrete casting, I've honed my
technical skills and gained a deeper understanding of project execution. Moreover,
exposure to project management principles has broadened my perspective, enhancing my
ability to coordinate and oversee construction activities effectively. I recommend measures
to enhance safety, including comprehensive insurance coverage, provision of safety gear,
and thorough safety training for workers. Overall, my experiences have equipped me with
the skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to the construction industry, and I am
committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and safety in
my future endeavours.

4.2. RECOMMENDATION

In the dynamic landscape of construction site visits, where practical learning intersects with
real-world challenges, a thorough evaluation of activities is indispensable. Across an
extensive eight-week period, a diverse spectrum of tasks spanning carpentry, steel bending,
block laying, concreting, and trench excavation unfolded, each unveiling its share of
triumphs and setbacks in execution. While punctuality, dedication, and adherence to
established procedures emerged as pillars of success, challenges such as water and
electricity unavailability underscored the need for proactive solutions. In addition to
bolstering safety protocols such as the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE), it is imperative to educate workers on-site about safety practices and procedures.
