B.E. COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FOURTH YEAR SECOND SEMESTER

SUPPLEMENTARY EXAM 2024

ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS
Time: Three hours Full Marks: 100

Answer question Q1 (compulsory) and any four from the rest

Use of steam and other thermodynamic tables is permitted
All parts of the same question must be answered together
Data, consistent with the problem may be assumed if necessary

Q1. Answer the following questions (any four): 20

(a) Define the following terms: enthalpy, phase, and entropy.
(b) What is PMM1? Why it is impossible?
(c) Define specific heat at constant volume and constant pressure.
(d) What is Air standard cycle?
(e) Define thermal efficiency of a heat engine cycle. Can this be 100%?

(a) When is work said to be done by a system? Derive a mathematical expression of

Q2. 8
displacement work for a polytropic process (pvn=constant).
(b) Determine the total work done by a gas system following an expansion process as
shown in the figure below. 12

Q3. (a) Define the following terms: Steam nozzle, Diffuser, Throttle valve. Derive an
expression of exit velocity for flow through steam nozzle. 10
(b) In a gas turbine unit, the gases flow through the turbine is 15 kg/s and the power
. developed by the turbine is 12MW. The enthalpies of gases at the inlet and outlet are
1260 kJ/kg and 400 kJ/kg respectively. The velocity of gases at the inlet and outlet are
50 m/s and 110 m/s respectively. Calculate: (i) The rate at which heat is rejected to the
turbine, (ii) the area of the inlet pipe given that the specific volume of the gases at the
inlet is 0.45 m3/kg. 10

Q4. (a) State and explain the Clausius statement of 2 nd law of thermodynamics.
(b) A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures of 600 0C 5
and 400C. The engine drives a reversible refrigerator which operates between reservoirs
at temperatures of 400C and -200C. The heat transfer to the heat engine is 2000 kJ and
the network output of the combined engine refrigerator plant is 360kJ. Evaluate the heat
transfer to the refrigerant and the net heat transfer to the reservoir at 40 0C. 15

compression ratio is 8. Heat supplied is 2100 kJ/kg. Calculate the maximum pressure
and temperature of the cycle, network output, cycle efficiency and the mean effective 12
pressure.
