Greetings Good morning, Class! Good morning, Kyle!
Checking of Attendance Class beadle? Are there any absent None, sir.
today?
Wow! Very good, that is good to
know.
Classroom Rules Class, Let us be reminded of our
classroom rules. STOP, LOOK,
LISTEN.
STOP, for stop talking.
LOOK, for look at the discussion
and
LISTEN, so that you will learn.
Please be reminded of our classroom
rules, okay? Yes, sir.
Review of the Previous
lesson Who can tell me about your previous
discussions last quarter, what did
you talked about?
We talked about Journalism, sir.
Can anybody define what
journalism is?
That is correct. How many rules are
there again?
Very good, thank you so much for
that. Always remember that in this
agreement, you should stick to
following these rules to have a clear
sentence. Understood?
B. ACTIVITY
(5 minutes) To jumpstart our lesson, let’s begin
with a mini-activity called “YASS
or YAKS!”
I will show you a series of
statements. If you agree with the
statement, show the “YASS”
gesture. If you disagree, show the
“YAKS” gesture instead.
Is that clear?
Yes, sir!
Let us start!
“Students should not be given
homework.”
Is this YASS or YAKS?
(STUDENTS ANSWER MAY
VARY)
Okay, Dyllan! Why did you answer
YASS to this statement?
Because I believe assignments are no
use in the actual process of
knowledge, sir.
Why do you think so?
It is more of a burden rather than an
enriching task, sir.
Thank you, Dyllan! How about
Vince, why did you answered
YAKS to this statement?
I believe assignments are helpful to
students since it gives us an
opportunity to practice what we
learned in school.
Very good! Thank you, Vince!
How about this statement,
“Cellphones should be allowed
during classes”
Is this a YAKS or YASS?
(Students answer may vary)
Okay, Shaine! Why did you answer
YASS to this statement?
Because I believe that using
smartphones inside the class can help
progress the learners by aiding them
necessary tools that can help the
learning process of the students.
That is a good take, Shaine!
How about Dodordz? Why did you
answer YAKS?
I believe that using smartphones can
cause distractions during classes.
Instead of helping us progress, it
distracts our attention making us shy
How about this statement, “Online away from the process of learning.
games are beneficial to teenagers.”
How about this, who wants to
answer?
Yes, Fred! Fredrick raises his hand
I answered YASS because online
games are motivating. It helps us be
more active in life by giving us an
inspiration to finish everything to
have time to play.
Let us have BJ, why did you answer
YAKS?
It is a big distraction to us, sir. We
spend too much time on playing
games that we forget our duties in
life.
Very good, BJ! Well done,
everyone! You really have your own
beliefs in current issues.
C. ANALYSIS
(3 minutes) During the mini-activity, what have
you observed? Let us have Aleeza.
We were given a chance to share our
beliefs on a specific issue or topic.
Very good! During the activity, you
have shared your claims or beliefs in
a certain topic.
Aside from the issues that I have
shared, can you give me another hot
issue in our society today?
The corruption in the Flood Control
projects, sir.
Good! What about it? What is your
claim or belief on that issue?
I believed that all funds should be
transparent so that anomalies such as
these can be prevented.
Great job, Mario! How about Vince?
What is your take about this issue?
We should change our leaders, sir.
We should elect leaders that are
competent and has no shady
backgrounds.
Very good! You can really
demonstrate good reasoning about
your or beliefs.
Today, we will be learning about
Assertions and Counterclaims.
Yes, sir!
Are you ready?
D. ABSTRACTION When you hear the word
20 minutes “Assertion” what comes to your
mind?
Based on our mini-activity, I think
sir it talks about a belief on a certain
topic.
Very good! An assertion is a
statement used to make a declaration
or to express strong belief on a
particular topic, often without
evidence. Just like what you did in
the YASS or YAKS, that is a very
good example of an assertion, right?
Yes, sir!
But before we dive deeper to its
types, let us have first your reading
assignment. What text did I give you
last meeting?
The World’s Response to COVID
19 and the Mixed Bag of Result I
Brought Are a Lesson to the World.
Good! What does it talk about?
It talked about what COVID-19 has
brought to the people around the
world.
Yes! The text also talked about how
the government took actions during
the pandemic.
Is the text an example of Assertion?
Yes, sir!
Why do you think so?
Because in the text, the author
confidently lays his statement or
beliefs about the things that
happened during the pandemic.
That is right! The author of the text
gives a strong and confident
statements about COVID-19
without stating evidence.
Assertions has many types, but
today we will be only dealing with
these three: Basic Assertion,
Emphatic Assertion, I-language
Assertions.
What comes to your mind when you
hear the word “Basic assertion”?
It is giving a basic comment about a
certain issue.
Great job! A basic assertion is the
direct statement of the feelings,
beliefs, or opinions of the writer.
Let us take a look at this specific
paragraph from the text. Why do you
think that this is considered as a
basic assertion?
It is a basic assertion because it
shows a straightforward assertion.
Very good! In what way does it
show straightforwardness?
By indicating the opinion of the
Excellent! This phrase is an example writer about the issue of COVID-19.
of a basic assertion since it shows
the direct opinion or beliefs of the
writer, followed by the support in
the following sentence.
Where do you think basic assertions
is usually used for?
It can be found in formal writings,
Exactly! Basic assertions can be sir.
seen in academic writings such as
Thesis and Dissertation. We can
found basic assertions in thesis
statements and introduction topic
since it clearly states what the study
is claiming and what the importance
of the study is.
How about Emphatic Assertion?
What comes to your mind when you
hear the word emphatic assertion?
What about empathy? How does it I think it talks about empathy, sir.
connect to the Empathic Assertion?
It is the writer’s sensitivity to the
feelings and emotions of a person’s
situation.
Correct! Emphatic Assertion is a
statement used to express empathy
on how a person understands the
person’s situation.
In the text, where do you think there
is an emphatic assertion?
The paragraph “The Philippines’
response to the COVID-19 pandemic
was grossly lacking, marked by poor
decisions, uncoordinated efforts, and
lack of foresight that led to immense
loss of life, badly beaten economy,
and thousands of hopeless
Filipinos.”
Very good! Why do you think that
that paragraph is an Emphatic
Assertion?
Because it expresses empathy to the
life of Filipinos during pandemic.
Excellent! This is an Emphatic
Assertion since the writer shows
empathy towards the situation of
Filipinos.
The last type of Assertion is the I-
language assertion. From the word
“I” what does it imply?
It is expressing your thoughts using
the pronoun “I”
This type of assertion is used to
affirm the writer’s feelings and
preference. This is called “I-
language Assertion” it focuses on
the writer uses the pronoun “I”.
This type of assertion usually has
three parts: first part includes direct
information from the text, second
part contains the feelings of the
writer, and lastly the statement that
reflects the preference of the writer.
Just like in this sample paragraph:
“Upon reading that the ancient
Filipino civilization is divided into
three social classes namely the
“maharlika”, “timawa”, and
“alipin”, I feel proud because of the
promulgation of social
differentiation. With this finding, I
want to do further research on the
existence of these social classes’
stigma.”
Where do you think is the direct
information from the text?
“Upon reading that the ancient
Filipino civilization is divided into
three social classes namely the
“maharlika”, “timawa”, and “alipin”
Very good! Because it is found in
the very beginning of the text and it
supplies the information about the
text.
As you can see, in the second part of
the sentence we can already see the
pronoun “I” and it contains the
feelings of the writer, and in the last
sentence we can see the preference
of the writer.
Now that you have learned what an
assertion is, what do you think is the
difference between assertion and
claim?
I think assertion and claim is just the
same, sir. I gives the same meaning
about expressing something.
Very good! However, there is
difference between the two. When
we say claim, it is a statement that
argues a position and needs to be
proven with evidence. Just like in
this example:
“Online games can improve
problem-solving skills because
according to the research of John
Lloyd Cruz, many games require
strategic thinking and quick
decision-making”.
From this claim, what do you think
is our evidence here?
The research of John Lloyd Cruz, sir.
Because it supports our claim in the
first statement.
Very good! Now, assertion and
claims has what they call their
“frenemy” because it opposes them.
However, this “frenemy” of theirs
can also help them strengthen their
purpose. This is what we call
counterargument. From the word
“counter” what comes to your mind?
It is disagreeing or opposing your
viewpoint, sir.
Very good! A counterclaim is an
opposing statement that argues a
claim or assertion.
What do you think is the purpose of
a counterargument?
Counterarguments helps us balance
our writing since it offers a wider
perspective on a certain issue, sir.
Good! The purpose of this is to show
fairness that the writer understands
the other perspective on the topic.
By having counterarguments on
your claim or assertion, you can also
explain why your position is
stronger.
To further understand, let is take a
look at this short example right here:
Claim:
Homework helps students practice
the lessons they learn in school.
Counterargument:
However, some people argue that
too much homework can cause
stress and leave students with little
time for rest and family.
Response to the
Counterargument:
Although excessive homework may
cause stress, giving a reasonable
amount of homework can still help
students review and understand their
lessons better.
What have you observed?
By using counterarguments the text
Great observation! Let us all was able to explain and defend its
remember that using claim even more.
counterarguments in writing
assertions and claims is important
because it makes our main argument
stronger.
To summarize when we say
Assertion, it is your bold idea on a
specific topic. When you say claim,
it is your supported argument, and
when we say counterclaim it is the
opposing the idea to balance or
alleviate you assertion or claim.
Did you get it?
Yes, sir!
E. APPLICATION To test your knowledge about the
10 minutes three, let us have an activity called
“Odd One Out”. I will be showing
you series of sentences and I want
you to remove the sentence that does
not belong in the group, okay?
Let us start!
What do you think is the odd one in
here?
a. School uniforms are beneficial for
students.
b. School uniforms are beneficial
because they promote equality and
reduce distractions in school.
C. School uniforms are beneficial
according to ResearchGate since it
makes the student more confident in
classes.
The odd one in there is letter A since
it is an assertion, sir.
Very good! The odd one is letter A!
How about this one:
a. Smartphones should be allowed
during class hours.
b. Smartphones makes the students
more intelligent.
c. Critiques say that smartphones The odd one is letter c. Both A and B
hinders the learning progress of the deals with personal beliefs, but letter
students. C negates the beliefs given, sir.
Excellent! Letter C is the odd one in
the group.
How about this:
a. Critiques say that smartphones are
bad for students.
b. Researchers found out that
smartphones are helpful to young
learners.
c. However, mobile phones can
distract students from their lessons.
Letter B since it is a claim because it
give a support or evidence.
Where do you think is the odd one
here?
Correct! Letter B is the odd one from
the group.
None so far, sir.
Great job, everyone! You can now
identify the difference between the
three.
Are there any questions or
clarifications?
F. EVALUATION Since there are no more questions, I
(10 minutes) want you to get a 1/4 sheet of paper
