4. (a)Explain the procedures of using methylated spirit, water and a pendulum bob to find the relative density of spirit. ( 4 marks )
(b)The reading of a spring balance when a block is suspended from it in the air is 60N. This reading is changed to 40N when
the block is submerged in water. Find the apparent loss in weight of the block and then determine its relative density.

5. (a)Describe four ways that can be used to destroy a magnet. ( 4 marks )
(b)A pulley system with efficiency of 75% is made up of four pulleys. Sketch a well labelled diagram of this machine
and then determine the effort required to raise two bags of maize each weighing 100kg. ( 5 marks )
6. (a) “Though fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal are widely used, they are not sustainable.” Give reasons to support the
statement above. ( 4 marks )
(b)What are the advantages of using the sun as the source of energy. ( 5 marks )

7. (a)A trolley was pulled by a force of 60N acting 30 0 to the horizontal. Find the horizontal and vertical components of this
force. ( 5 marks )
(b)A shark moving in water in a straight line at 30 km/h to the East meets a water current flowing at 10 km/h to the
North. Calculate the resultant velocity of the shark. ( 4 marks )

8. (a) Explain why most vehicles have their engines directly over the drive wheels? ( 3 marks )
(b)An aluminium block of mass 2.1 kg rests on a steel platform. A horizontal force of 15N is applied to the block.
(i)Given that coefficient of limiting friction 0.6, will the block move? ( 3 marks )
(ii)If will move, what will be its acceleration? Given that coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.47 ( 3 marks )

SECTION C: (30 marks)


Answer only two (2) questions in this section. Each question carries fifteen marks (15%).

9. (a)Explain thermal conduction in terms of kinetic theory of matter.
(b)With the aid of diagram describe how sea and land breeze take place. ( 5 marks )
(c)Briefly explain on the following observations:
(i)Steam pipes are covered with felt or asbestos. ( 2.5 marks )
(ii)In a very cold morning a piece of metal bar feels much colder to the hand than a piece of wood? ( 2.5 marks )

10.(a)Why a bubble of air increases in volume as it rises from the bottom of water to the surface? Briefly explain. ( 5 marks )
(b)A metal pipe which is 1 m long at40 ° C increases in length by 0.3 % when carrying a steam at100 ° C . Find the
coefficient of linear expansion. ( 5 marks )
(c)Figure 1 shows a circuit diagram for controlling the temperature of a sitting room. Describe how the circuit controls the
temperature when the switch is closed.

11. (a)Why is it not advisable for soldiers to march across the bridge with the same beat? ( 4 marks )
(b)A turning fork produces resonances in a tube at 40cm and 85cm respectively. Calculate the wavelength of the turning
fork. ( 5 marks )
(c)The shortest length of the air column in a resonance tube with one end closed and the other end open which resonates to a
note of frequency 500Hz is found to be 160 mm. Calculate the shortest length of the column of air which resonates in
similar conditions to a note of frequency 800Hz. ( 6 marks )
