Data communication:
• Data communication is the exchange of data between computers or devices through transmission
medium.
Examples of medium are: Wire cable, wireless system, microwave system, satellite system etc.
Examples: Microwave System, Wireless System
• A data communication system is a collection of hardware and software arranged to communicate information
from one location (device) to another location (device).
A common example of data communication is the transmission of data between one computer and server
connecting through the internet with a modem.
Data:
Data means any types of raw facts and figures which can be provided as input to the computer for
processing.
Data can be in the form of text, sound, graphics, image or video.
Data Transmission:
Data Transmission means sending information from one place to another using computer networks
and data communication systems
Data transmission is also called digital transmission or digital communication.
Media for Data Transmission:
It includes cables e.g telephone lines and fibre optics or wire-less media like microwave, infrared
and satellite etc.
Data transmission form:
• Data transmission means sending and receiving of digital or analog data through communication
medium to one or more digital devices. The data can be transmitted from one place to another in
the form of electromagnetic or light waves through the communication media.
Analog vs digital signal:
Analog signal Digital signal
Analog signals are continuous signals Digital signals are discrete signals
Analog signal uses continuous values for Digital signal uses discrete values for representing
representing the information. the information.
Analog signals can be affected by the noise during Digital signals cannot be affected by the noise
the transmission during the transmission.
Digital signals carries data in the binary form e.g: 0
Analog signal transmit data in the form of a wave
and 1
Digital signal has a finite range e.g: between 0 and
Analog signals has no fixed range
1
Analog signals consumes less bandwidth Digital signal consumes more bandwidth
Digital signal cannot be affected by noise during
Analog signal accuracy is affected by noise
transmission
Analog signal is more prone to distortion Digital signal is less prone to distortion
Analog signal is represented by sine wave. Digital signal is represented by square wave.
Example: the human voice is the best example Example: signals used for transmission in a
of an analog signal computer are the digital signals
