CHAPTER 3: TECHNOLOGIES USED
3.1 Java
Java is a high-level, object-oriented programming language widely used for developing platform-independent
applications. It follows the principle of “write once, run anywhere,” which means the program can run on any
system with a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). In this project, Java is used for backend processing, handling user
requests, implementing business logic, and managing data operations. It also supports database connectivity
through JDBC, making it suitable for building web-based applications like the attendance management system.
3.2 Swing / Spring Boot
Swing is a part of Java used for building graphical user interfaces (GUI) in desktop applications. It provides
components like buttons, labels, text fields, and tables to design interactive interfaces. In general, Swing is
used to create user-friendly screens for input and display. However, in this project, instead of Swing, JSP and
HTML are used to design the user interface because the application is web-based.
3.3 JDBC
JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) is an API used to connect Java applications with databases. It allows
execution of SQL queries, retrieval of data, and updating of database records. In this project, JDBC is used to
connect the application with the MySQL database. It helps in performing operations such as inserting student
data, storing attendance records, and retrieving information for reports and calculations.
3.4 Database (MySQL)
The database used in this project is MySQL. It is used to store all the application data such as student details,
attendance records, and user login information. The database ensures that data is stored in a structured and
organized manner. It provides fast access, easy retrieval, and secure storage of information. MySQL plays a
key role in maintaining consistency and reliability of the system.

4.3 Keys and Constraints
• Primary Key: id in users, roll_no in students, id in attendances.
• Foreign Key: roll_no in attendances table is linked to students table to maintain relationship.
• NOT NULL constraints: Important fields like username, password, roll_no, and name cannot be empty.
4.4 Table Relationships
In this project, the tables are related to each other to maintain proper data organization and avoid redundancy.
The Students table and Attendances table are connected through the roll_no field. The roll_no in the Students
table acts as a primary key, and the same field is used as a foreign key in the Attendances table. This
relationship ensures that attendance records are linked to the correct student.

CHAPTER 5: SYSTEM MODULES
Module 1: Add Student
This module allows the user to add new student details such as roll number, name, class, section, and parent
information. The data is entered through a form and stored in the MySQL database using JDBC. It helps in
maintaining student records in an organized way.
Module 2: Mark Attendance
This module is used to record daily attendance of students. The user selects class, section, and date, and marks
each student as present or absent. The attendance data is saved in the database for future use.
Module 3: View Attendance
This module displays the attendance records of students based on class, section, and date. It retrieves data from
the database and shows it in a tabular format. This helps in monitoring attendance history easily.

along with their attendance details or percentage. The data is fetched from the database and shown in a
structured format. This helps teachers analyze overall class performance easily.
12
CHAPTER 6: IMPLEMENTATION
6.1 Database Connection
In this project, JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) is used to connect the Java application with the MySQL
database. The connection is established by loading the MySQL driver using Class for Name() and then using
Driver Manager getConnection() with database URL, username, and password. Once connected, SQL queries
such as INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE, and DELETE are executed using Prepared Statement. This allows the
application to store and retrieve data efficiently from the database.
6.2 Input Validation
The system validates user input to ensure that only correct and meaningful data is entered into the database.
Required fields such as username, roll number, and class are checked to ensure they are not empty. Data types
are validated, for example, roll numbers must be numeric. The system also prevents duplicate entries by
checking existing records in the database. Input validation helps maintain data accuracy and avoids errors
during processing.
6.3 Exception Handling
The system uses exception handling to manage runtime errors and ensure smooth execution. Try-catch blocks
are used to handle exceptions such as database connection failures, invalid inputs, and SQL errors. If an error
occurs, the system displays an appropriate message instead of crashing. This improves the reliability and
stability of the application and helps in debugging issues effectively.
