Example Corbel

The document outlines the structural design calculations for a column corbel, detailing its dimensions, loads, and material properties. It includes checks for code limitations and calculations for required steel reinforcement areas based on ACI code 318M. The final design specifies the use of Ø25 mm for primary reinforcement and Ø10 mm for stirrups, with a total area of reinforcement calculated for safety and compliance.

Q: A column Corbel of overall depth h=575 mm, width b=350mm, effective depth d=500
mm
and shear span av=75 mm, is required to carry shear ultimate force Vu=540 kN and
horizontal ultimate tensile load Nuc= 200kN. Use f 'c=35MPa and fy=410MPa. Assume
the concrete surface of the Corbel is intentionally roughened according to ACI – 11.6.9.
Check code limitation of corbel and calculate the steel area required according to ACI-
code 318M, Use Ø25 mm for reinforcement and Ø10 mm for stirrups.

Solution
av /d not greater than 1
av /d = 75 /500 =0.15 less than 1
Factored horizontal tensile force,
1- Nuc, not larger than Vu
2- Nuc, shall not be taken less than 0.2Vu
