Reflection 1

Belize has a high number of teens, and a lot of them are either getting into gangs or overall

becoming a nuisance to society. The government needs to start making changes because the

youth are the future of Belize, and they will steer what direction the country will move in.

The video is a newscast from Greater Belize Media, and it is an interview with former Compol

Chester Williams. He explains how gangs are making inexperienced teens pull the trigger, using

them as pawns. The song is by Duane Stephenson, and he encompasses the struggles faced by

youths of today, sung by a man who made those same mistakes but is now taking accountability

for his past actions and is now pleading for forgiveness. The poem titled Juvenile Delinquency

by John McLeish expresses a journey into a troubled teen’s mind, specifically on how, in their

perspective, wrongdoing is good and being a nuisance is “cool.” These impacted me by giving

me different perspectives on the minds of delinquents, either through lack of guidance, acts of

peer pressure, or searching for social approval.
