A thin-film ransistor (TFT)
is a special kind of field-
effect transistor made by
depositing thin films of
an active semiconductor
layer.

Light Emitting Diode
• It is an electronically
modulated optical
device made up of many
number of segments
filled with liquid
crystals and arrayed in
front of a light
source (backlight)
or reflector to produce
images in color
or monochrome.
• Liquid crystals were first
discovered in 1888

Light Emitting Diode
1. Polarizing filter film with a vertical axis to
polarize light as it enters.
2. Glass substrate with ITOelectrodes. The
shapes of these electrodes will
determine the shapes that will appear
when the LCD is turned ON. Vertical
ridges etched on the surface are smooth.
3. Twisted nematic liquid crystal.
4. Glass substrate with common electrode
film (ITO) with horizontal ridges to line
up with the horizontal filter.
5. Polarizing filter film with a horizontal axis
to block/pass light.
6. Reflective surface to send light back to
viewer. (In a backlit LCD, this layer is
replaced with a light source.

• An LED display is
a flat panel display,
which uses an array
of light-emitting
diodes as pixels for
a video display.
Graphics Plotter
What is a printer?
• An external hardware device responsible for
taking computer data and generating a hard
copy of that data.
• Printers are one of the most commonly used
peripherals and they print text and still images
on the paper.
26
“Factors affecting print quality”
• (1) DPI:
It is a measurement of printer’s resolution indicating how
many ink dots can be placed by the printer in one square
inch. The higher the DPI, the sharper is image.
• (2) Type of printer:
Each type of printer has its own capabilities of printing.
Some types of printers produce high quality print while
other produce low quality print.
• (3) Print Mode:
The printing mode may also affect the quality. For example
the draft mode increases the print rate but quality is
reduced.
• (4) Toner:
The quality and amount of toner also affects print quality.

“Impact Printer”
• The impact printers print the
characters by striking them on
the ribbon which is then
pressed on the paper.
• Very low consumable costs
• Very noisy
• Useful for bulk printing due to
low cost
• There is physical contact with
the paper to produce an
image
29
“Non-Impact Printers”
• These printers create an image on the
print medium without the use of
force. They don’t touch the paper
while creating an image. Non-impact
printers are much quieter than impact
printers as they don’t strike the paper.
Characteristics of Non-impact Printers
• Faster than impact printers.
• They are not noisy.
• High quality.
• Support many fonts and different
character size.

Inkjet
• The term dot matrix refers to
the process of placing dots to
form an image.
• Its speed is usually 30 to 550
characters per second (cps).
• This is the cheapest and the
most noisy printer and has a
low print quality. Dot Matrix
were 1st introduced by
Centronics in 1970.

• Daisy wheel printing was used
in electronic typewriters, word
processors and computers
from 1972. The daisy wheel is
considered to be so named
because of its resemblance to
the daisy flower.

This printer is like a drum in shape
so it is called drum printer. The
surface of drum is divided into
number of tracks. Total tracks are
equal to size of paper i.e. for a
paper width of 132 characters,
drum will have 132 tracks. A
character set is embossed on track.
One rotation of drum prints one
line. Drum printers are fast in
speed and can print 300 to 2000
lines per minute.

In this printer, chain of character sets
are used so it is called Chain Printer. A
standard character set may have 48, 64,
or 96 characters.
Advantages
Character fonts can easily be changed.
Different languages can be used with
the same printer.

Inkjet
These are non-impact page printers. They use laser lights to produce
the dots needed to form the characters to be printed on a page.
Advantages
•Very high speed
•Very high quality output
•Give good graphics quality
•Support many fonts and different character size
Disadvantages
•Expensive.
•Cannot be used to produce multiple copies of a document in a
single printing

Inkjet
•Sprays small drops of ink on a paper.
•The print head of an inkjet printer
contains up to 64 tiny nozzels that can
be heated by selectively in a few
microseconds by an integrated circuit
resistor.
•When the resistor heats up, the ink
near it vaporizes and is ejected through
nozzel making a dot on a papar placed
in front of print head.
