Topic: Nervous System & Human Actions

1. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

The Peripheral Nervous System consists of a network of nerves spread in the body to
connect all parts to the Central Nervous System.

• There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves which arise from the brain.

• There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves which arise from the spinal cord.

2. Working of the Nervous System (Simple & Accurate)

The nervous system detects changes and produces responses through these key
steps:

1. Stimulus: Any change in the environment (like heat or sound) that a receptor
detects.

2. Sensory Neurons: These carry the message from the receptor to the Central
Nervous System (Brain).

3. Processing: The Central Nervous System processes the message and sends a
signal to motor neurons.

4. Motor Neurons: These carry the nerve impulse to the Effectors (Muscles and
Glands) to produce a response.

Stimulus → Receptor → Sensory Neuron → CNS → Motor Neuron → Effector →

Response

3. Actions Controlled by the Nervous System

Voluntary actions:
The body actions which are performed under conscious control, i.e., which are done
after thinking over them are called voluntary actions. For example; speaking, eating,
reading, walking, running, clapping, etc., are voluntary actions.

Involuntary actions:
The body actions which are performed without involvement of thinking process are
called involuntary actions. Involuntary actions are not performed under conscious
control.
