The document discusses the classification of solids into crystalline and amorphous types, highlighting their differences in structure, melting points, and physical properties. Crystalline solids have a definite geometric arrangement and sharp melting points, while amorphous solids lack a regular structure and melt gradually. The text also touches on concepts like isotropy and anisotropy, as well as the types of crystalline solids and their characteristics.

SOLIDS AND THEIR CLASSIFICATION
Solids are
thei constituent parr O i8id and have high mechanical strength, This indicates that
et ceettoe Paice (atoms, molecules or ions) are closely packed. They are held together

orderly arrangement of constituent particles, On the other hand, an amorphous solid doesnot

2, Melting Points. The crystalline substances have sharp melting points. They change
abruptly into liquid state. Amorphous solids do not have sharp melting points. These
substances melt gradually over a temperature range.
3, Isotropy and Anisotropy. Amorphous solids
resemble liquids and gases in one way i. their
properties like electrical conductivity, refractive
index, mechanical strength ete. are identical in all
directions. This property is called isotropy, thus
amorphous substances are said to be isotropic. On.
the other hand, crystalline substances are
anisotropic ie. their physical properties like
refractive index, mechanical strength etc. have
different values in different directions. The reason
being that there is ordered molecular, atomic or _Fig. 1. Anisotropy shown by
ionic arrangment in crystalline substances. When substances.
the properties are measured along the direction AB, they will be different when measured
along the direction CD as shown in Fig. 1. We find different types of atoms along both these
directions, therefore the value of physical property varies accordingly.
In amorphous solids there is random arrangement of atoms or molecules, therefore, all

Q. 17. Why amorphous solids are also called
‘Ans. Amorphous solids do not have sharp melting points. As the temperalure is raised,
‘farts to flow. The absence of a sharp melting points
amphorphous solid gradually soften and s s
suggests that these solids can be thought of ‘liquids at all temperatures’
