ACTIVITY 4: DATA GATHERING

4.1 ANNEXURE A: QUESTIONNAIRE RESPONSES (Updated for Vhembe Floods)

Respondent 1 (Grade 11 Learner A)

1. What do you understand about Natural disaster?

A natural disaster is a sudden, destructive event caused by nature, such as floods or storms. It causes
damage to homes, roads, crops and can lead to injuries or death. It is beyond human control and affects
communities severely.

2. Two examples of natural disasters witnessed in your community:

· Flooding in Vhembe after continuous heavy rainfall.

· A severe hailstorm that damaged roofs and cars.

3. What should communities do to stay safe during floods?

Communities should listen to warnings from authorities, avoid crossing flooded bridges such as the
collapsing bridges in Vhembe particularly recent Tswinga Bridge scenario and evacuate early to safer,
higher ground. Families should prepare emergency bags and follow instructions from disaster
management.

4. How can flooding affect community members?

Floods can destroy homes, wash away belongings, and block access to schools and clinics. Some families
in Vhembe could not reach hospitals due to flooded roads . Floods also cause emotional stress,
especially when people lose property or loved ones .

5. Negative impact of social media reporting :

Social media can spread rumours about more flooding, causing panic. People also share sensitive images
of victims without permission, which is disrespectful and traumatic.

6. Positive impact of social media reporting:

It helps warn people quickly about dangerous roads, like the closed bridges in Vhembe. It helps victims
let their friends and family know they are safe. It allows people to see what help is needed in real-time.
Communities can use it to set up donation points and coordinate who is bringing what, making the help
very organized and efficient.
Respondent 2: (Grade 11 Learner B)

1. What do you understand about Natural disaster?

It's a dangerous event that happens in nature, like a flood, earthquake, or fire. It usually happens
suddenly and can destroy houses, roads, and farms, and it can hurt or kill people. It's something we can't
stop from happening.

2. What could be the TWO examples of Natural disasters you have ever witnessed in your community?

· A big storm with strong winds that blew trees down.

· Flooding in the streets after the drainage system got blocked.

3. In your opinion, what should the communities do to stay safe during the floods?

They should not wait until the last minute to leave if they are in a dangerous area. They should pack a
bag with important things and keep it ready. People should help each other, especially the elderly. The
municipality should also make sure the drainage systems are cleaned regularly.

4. In which way do you think flooding may affect members of the communities?

The biggest impact is losing your home and everything inside. It can be very expensive to rebuild.
People can get sick from the dirty water left behind. It's also hard on children because they can't go to
school, and it's very scary for them.

5. Explain how social media reporting can have negative impact on flood victims.

People sometimes use social media to share unverified videos that make the situation seem worse,
causing unnecessary fear. It can also lead to "disaster tourism," where people go to affected areas just
to take pictures and get in the way of rescue efforts.

6. Explain how social media reporting can have positive impact on flood victims.

It helps victims let their friends and family know they are safe. It allows people to see what help is
needed in real-time. Communities can use it to set up donation points and coordinate who is bringing
what, making the help very organized and efficient.
Respondent 3 (Grade 11 Learner C)

A natural disaster is a major, destructive event like floods or wildfires that disrupts life and requires help
from outside organisations.

Examples:

· Flash flooding after long hours of rainfall.

· A heatwave that affected elderly people.

Communities should create emergency routes, set up communication groups, and have community
funds to help families affected by floods.

Floods can cause financial loss, injuries, trauma, and displacement. In Vhembe, some families were
moved to temporary shelters after their houses were damaged.

Social media can be used by scammers pretending to collect donations. It can also spread arguments
and blame during a disaster instead of solutions.

It helps hold authorities accountable and connects flood victims to long-term services such as
counselling and rebuilding programmes.

Respondent 4 (Grade 11 Learner D)

A natural disaster is a natural event that causes great suffering and damage, requiring government and
community response.

Examples:

· Heavy flooding that damaged bridges in the Vhembe region.

· A landslide after heavy rains blocking access roads.

Communities should stay informed using radio or WhatsApp groups, avoid crossing floodwater, and
keep important documents safe. They should know evacuation points when rivers overflow.

Floods can destroy infrastructure, cut off electricity, affect farmers’ harvests, and force families into
shelters. Roads in Vhembe were closed, making travel impossible.

Graphic images shared online can traumatize victims. Misinformation about safe routes can send people
into danger.

Social media helps coordinate volunteers, donations, and share maps showing which Vhembe roads are
flooded or open.

4.2 INTERPRETATION AND SUMMARY OF RESPONSES (Updated – Vhembe Floods)

The responses show that the recent floods in Vhembe have made learners more aware of the
seriousness of natural disasters. All respondents understand natural disasters as sudden and destructive
events beyond human control. They identified floods, hailstorms, and severe storms as the most
common disasters experienced locally.

A strong theme across responses is the importance of community safety and preparedness, such as
listening to weather alerts, avoiding flooded bridges, clearing drainage systems, and having evacuation
plans. The floods in Vhembe made this especially clear, as several roads and bridges became unusable,
leaving some families stranded.

Learners explained that floods affect communities both physically and emotionally. Houses were
destroyed, access to schools and clinics was disrupted, families were displaced, and some people
experienced stress and trauma. In certain villages, roads were so damaged that ambulances struggled to
reach patients.

The responses also show a balanced understanding of social media. Negatively, it spreads
misinformation that causes panic and may invade victims’ privacy. Positively, it provides fast
communication, helps coordinate relief efforts, and allows families to locate their loved ones. Overall,
the data highlights that while floods cause major destruction, effective communication and community
cooperation can reduce harm.

ACTIVITY 5: FINDINGS

5.1 The impact of floods on victims

Floods severely affect victims by destroying homes, personal belongings, and infrastructure. In Vhembe,
many families were displaced after bridges collapsed and houses flooded. Victims face financial
challenges as they try to repair damage or replace lost items. Floods also bring health risks such as
waterborne diseases and injuries from debris. Children are affected when schools close due to unsafe
conditions. Emotionally, victims experience fear, trauma, and stress, especially when faced with sudden
loss. The social structure of communities is disrupted as people are separated or relocated.

5.2 The pros and cons of media reporting on flood victims

Media reporting has important benefits during floods. It provides real-time updates on road closures,
safe shelters, and government warnings. In Vhembe, social media helped residents know which bridges
were unsafe and where emergency relief was available. Media also helps mobilise donations and
volunteers quickly.

However, media can also be harmful. False information spreads easily, causing panic and confusion.
Some people share sensitive content of victims without permission, which invades privacy and worsens
emotional distress. Additionally, scammers may use social media to collect fake donations. Therefore,
while media can save lives, it must be used carefully and responsibly.

ACTIVITY 6: REFLECTION
This research project helped me understand the real impact of natural disasters, especially after learning
about the recent floods in Vhembe. I realised that floods are not just about water damage—they affect
people’s lives emotionally, socially, and financially. The struggles faced by victims made me more
empathetic and aware of the importance of preparedness. I also learned that social media plays both a
helpful and harmful role during disasters. This has changed how I think about the information I share
online. The project influenced my behaviour by encouraging me to be more safety-conscious, know
evacuation routes, and support community efforts during emergencies. Overall, it taught me the value
of unity, responsibility, and staying informed.

*ACTIVITY 7: CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this research project provided an in-depth understanding of floods and their effects on
communities. It revealed that the recent Vhembe floods caused extensive physical destruction,
emotional trauma and social disruption. The findings showed that preparedness, early warnings and
community cooperation are essential in reducing risks. I learned that media can be a powerful tool for
coordinating relief efforts but it can also be damaging when used irresponsibly. One limitation of this
research is that only four learners were surveyed, which may not represent the entire community.
However, the project has strengthened my awareness of disaster management and emphasised the
importance of responsible communication and collective action during natural disasters.
