INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCER IN SOUTH
AFRICA
Electrotechnology III (ELT36WI)
1. Introduction and Background
South Africa is currently facing a significant electricity supply crisis due to increasing demand and
aging infrastructure. The country has historically relied on coal-fired power stations managed by
Eskom. Challenges such as load shedding and maintenance issues have increased the need for
alternative energy solutions. Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and renewable energy are key
solutions.
2. Aim of the Project
The aim is to investigate IPPs and analyse electrical requirements for a new building, including
calculations, design, and energy generation.
3. Assignment Questions
3.1 DMRE Mission
To ensure sustainable and secure energy supply for socio-economic development.
3.2 National Grid Entity
Eskom is responsible for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
3.3 Renewable Energy
Energy from natural sources like solar, wind, and water. Solar is most suitable in South Africa.
3.4 IPPs
Private entities generating electricity to support the national grid.
3.5 Base Load
Minimum continuous electricity demand.
3.6 Power Consumption
Total estimated load = 20.2 kW
3.7 Transformer Capacity
S = P / PF = 20.2 / 0.83 = 24.34 kVA ≈ 25 kVA
3.8 Substation Design
Includes transformer, grid supply, solar panels, and backup generator.
3.9 Solar Output
10 kW supplied to grid when unused.
3.10 Income
40 kWh × R2.50 = R100
4. Conclusion
IPPs and renewable energy are essential for solving South Africa’s energy crisis. Solar integration
reduces costs and improves sustainability.
