Infosys Quantitative Aptitude - Detailed Notes
1. Number System
Definition: Deals with types of numbers (natural, whole, integers, rational, irrational, real).
Divisibility Rules: e.g., divisible by 2 (last digit even), divisible by 3 (sum of digits divisible by 3).
Important concepts: HCF, LCM, Prime factorization, Remainder Theorem.
Formulas:
• HCF × LCM = Product of numbers (for two numbers).
• Euler’s theorem, Fermat’s theorem (advanced).
2. Algebra & Equations
Covers expressions, identities, and solving equations.
Key Identities:
• (a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
• (a-b)² = a² - 2ab + b²
• (a+b)(a-b) = a² - b²
Quadratic Equations: ax² + bx + c = 0
Roots formula: x = [-b ± √(b²-4ac)] / 2a
Relation between roots and coefficients:
• Sum of roots = -b/a
• Product of roots = c/a
3. Percentages, Profit & Loss, SI & CI
Percentage = (Value / Total) × 100
Profit = SP - CP, Loss = CP - SP
Profit% = (Profit/CP) × 100, Loss% = (Loss/CP) × 100
Simple Interest (SI) = (P × R × T) / 100
Compound Interest (CI) = P(1 + R/100)^T - P
4. Ratio, Proportion, Averages, Mixtures
Ratio = Comparison of two quantities.
Proportion: a/b = c/d ⇒ ad = bc
Average = Sum of terms / Number of terms
Mixture Rule: Alligation method used to find ratio of quantities mixed.
5. Time, Speed, Distance
Speed = Distance / Time, Distance = Speed × Time
Relative Speed: If two bodies move towards each other, relative speed = sum of speeds.
If they move in same direction, relative speed = difference of speeds.
Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time
6. Time & Work / Pipes & Cisterns
Work formula: Work = Rate × Time
If A does work in x days ⇒ A’s 1-day work = 1/x
Combined work: If A = 1/x and B = 1/y, together = (1/x + 1/y) work per day.
Pipes: Inlet pipes add work, outlet pipes subtract work.
7. Permutations & Combinations
Permutation: Arrangement (order matters).
Formula: nPr = n! / (n-r)!
Combination: Selection (order doesn’t matter).
Formula: nCr = n! / (r!(n-r)!)
Relation: nPr = nCr × r!
Special cases: Circular permutation = (n-1)!
8. Probability
Probability = Favorable outcomes / Total outcomes
Properties: 0 ≤ P(E) ≤ 1, P(E) + P(E') = 1
For independent events: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B)
For mutually exclusive events: P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B)
9. Mensuration & Geometry
2D Shapes:
• Area of rectangle = l × b
• Area of triangle = ½ × base × height
• Area of circle = πr², Circumference = 2πr
3D Shapes:
• Volume of cube = a³, Surface area = 6a²
• Volume of cuboid = l × b × h
• Volume of sphere = (4/3)πr³, Surface area = 4πr²
• Volume of cylinder = πr²h, Surface area = 2πr(h+r)
10. Data Interpretation
Involves analyzing data given in charts, graphs, or tables.
Key skills: Calculation speed, approximation, percentage, ratio applications.
Common types: Bar charts, Pie charts, Line graphs, Tables.
