Basic Mathematics Notes
Basic Mathematics Notes Mathematics is the language of logic, patterns, and relationships. It helps us
solve problems, analyze situations, and understand the world around us. Basic mathematics includes
arithmetic, algebra, geometry, fractions, percentages, and simple equations. These concepts form the
foundation for higher studies in science, economics, statistics, engineering, and daily life activities.
Arithmetic is the first branch of mathematics that most students learn. It involves operations such as
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Addition combines numbers together. For example, 5
+ 3 = 8. Subtraction finds the difference between numbers, such as 10 - 4 = 6. Multiplication is repeated
addition, like 4 x 3 = 12. Division splits numbers into equal parts, such as 20 / 5 = 4. Fractions represent
parts of a whole. A fraction has a numerator and denominator. In the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator
and 4 is the denominator. Fractions can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided using specific
rules. Decimals are another way of representing fractions. For example, 0.5 is equal to 1/2.
Percentages are fractions out of 100. They are widely used in finance, business, economics, and
statistics. For example, 25 percent means 25 out of 100. To find 20 percent of 50, multiply 50 by 20 and
divide by 100, giving 10. Algebra introduces variables and equations. Variables are symbols such as x
or y that represent unknown values. An equation states that two expressions are equal. For example, x
+ 5 = 12 can be solved by subtracting 5 from both sides, giving x = 7. Algebra helps in solving real-life
problems involving unknown quantities. Geometry deals with shapes, sizes, and measurements.
Common shapes include triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles. The perimeter of a shape is the
total length of its boundary, while area measures the space inside it. For example, the area of a
rectangle is length multiplied by breadth. The area of a circle is calculated using the formula pi r
squared, where r is the radius. Basic mathematics also includes understanding ratios and proportions.
Ratios compare two quantities, such as 2:3. Proportions show that two ratios are equal. These
concepts are important in maps, recipes, business calculations, and economics. Another important
concept is averages. The average or mean is found by adding all values and dividing by the number of
values. If the numbers are 2, 4, and 6, the average is (2 + 4 + 6) / 3 = 4. Mathematics improves logical
thinking and analytical skills. Regular practice is important for mastering mathematical concepts.
Solving problems step by step helps students understand methods clearly and avoid mistakes. Basic
mathematics is not only useful in academics but also in everyday tasks such as budgeting, shopping,
banking, and measuring.
