Class9 Cell Notes

Cells are the fundamental units of life, categorized into prokaryotic (without a nucleus) and eukaryotic (with a true nucleus) types. Key organelles include the nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, and vacuoles, each serving specific functions. The document also outlines important processes like diffusion and osmosis, and highlights differences between plant and animal cells.

Class 9 Biology - The Fundamental Unit of Life (CELL)

Definition: Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life.

Cell Theory: All organisms are made of cells; cell is basic unit; cells come from pre-existing cells.

Types of Cells:

Prokaryotic: No nucleus (Bacteria)

Eukaryotic: True nucleus (Plants, Animals)

Cell Organelles:

Nucleus - control center

Mitochondria - powerhouse (ATP)

Ribosomes - protein synthesis

Golgi - packaging

ER - transport

Lysosomes - digestion

Vacuole - storage

Important Processes:

Diffusion: movement high to low

Osmosis: water movement

Active Transport: needs energy

Plant vs Animal Cell:

Plant: cell wall, plastids, large vacuole

Animal: no cell wall, small vacuole

Important Questions:

1. Define cell.

2. Who discovered cell?

3. State cell theory.

4. Difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

5. Why mitochondria is called powerhouse?

6. What is osmosis?

7. Draw and label plant cell.

8. Draw and label animal cell.

9. Functions of nucleus.
10. Difference between plant and animal cell.
