6 - Multiplying Rational Expressions MCR3U – Rational Expressions
Date: ______________________________________________
Multiplying Rational Expressions
The same rules as multiplying and dividing regular fractions, but these involve variables.
Example:
× ×
1. Factor
2. State Restrictions
3. Simplify (Cancel)
2 − 18 6 − 30 − 84
×
3 +6 8 + 24
Dividing Rational Expressions
The same rules as dividing regular fractions, but these fractions involve variables. When
dividing fractions we multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (flip) of the second
fraction.
When dividing, we must state restrictions for both the numerator and denominator of the
flipped fraction!
