Office Hours: M - W, 2:30PM - 3:30PM or by appointment Website: [Link]/latin-101-2 Description (I) In this year long course, if the student applies himself with diligence, he will gain the skills necessary to begin reading the Latin prose and poetry of Classical, Patristic, and Medieval authors. (II) Preparation for quizzes, regular homework, and in-class participation are the three elements in this course which require special application. This regular work will enable the Latin language to take root in the students mind: repetitio est mater memoriae. (III) As the student studies, he should remember that Latin is not just another language, but is uniquely able to shape the mind for analytical reasoning while substantially advancing the students knowledge of the grammar and the vocabulary of English. Finally, Latin is the vehicle by which a great part of Western civilization and the patrimony of the Catholic Church has reached posterity. Latin is thus an important tool for understanding and reflecting on what is good, beautiful, and true.

Goals Latin 101 is part of a two-semester sequence in which the goal is to learn the elements of Latin, with an emphasis on Classical Latin, to ensure the students familiarity with the fundamental language of Christendom. Over the course of the year, the student will be asked to learn correct pronunciation, to gain control over a working vocabulary, to learn how words are combined to form grammatically correct sentences, and to analyze sentences into their basic parts in Latin and English. In the fall, the focus is learning the ways in which nouns are formed and altered depending on their function in a sentence. In the spring, the focus is on the ways in which verbs are formed and altered to express who is acting, when, and whether the act is real, demanded, desired or imagined.
