Importance of Sensorial Exercises

Sensorial exercises are a key part of the Montessori method developed by Maria
Montessori. These exercises help children refine and develop their five senses: sight,
hearing, touch, smell, and taste.
Importance:
 Refinement of Senses:
Children learn to differentiate colors, shapes, sizes, sounds, textures, smells, and
tastes.
 Development of Intelligence:
Sensorial activities help in organizing the child’s mind and improve thinking skills.
 Preparation for Mathematics and Language:
Concepts like size, order, and comparison prepare children for math and
vocabulary.
 Improvement of Concentration:
Repetition of sensorial tasks builds focus and attention.
 Independence:
Children learn through self-correcting materials without adult help.
 Observation Skills:
Children become more aware of their environment.

2. Stereognostic Sense and Its Development

The stereognostic sense is the ability to recognize objects by touch without using sight.
According to Maria Montessori, this sense helps in developing the child’s brain and
imagination.
How to Develop It:
 Using a mystery bag (child identifies objects by touch)
 Feeling different objects (smooth, rough, soft, hard)
 Sorting objects without looking
 Matching shapes by touch
Importance:
 Enhances memory
 Develops tactile sensitivity
 Improves imagination and concentration

3. Three-Period Lesson and Memory Games

Three-Period Lesson
This is a teaching technique used to introduce new concepts.
First Period (Naming):
Teacher names the object (e.g., “This is red”).
Second Period (Recognition):
Child identifies it (“Show me red”).
Third Period (Recall):
Child names it independently (“What is this?”)
Purpose:
 Builds vocabulary
 Ensures understanding
 Strengthens memory

Memory Games
Memory games help children recall and recognize objects.
Examples:
 Tray game (remember objects and recall them)
 Matching games
 Finding missing objects
Benefits:
 Improves concentration
 Strengthens memory
 Develops observation skills
4. Exploring Dimensions (Exercises Briefly + Vocabulary)
These exercises help children understand size and dimension.
Common Materials:
 Pink Tower: Cubes from large to small
 Brown Stairs: Prisms showing thickness
 Red Rods: Rods showing length

Exercises:
 Arranging from big to small
 Comparing sizes
 Building structures

Vocabulary:
 Big / Small
 Long / Short
 Thick / Thin
 Tall / Short

5. How Montessori Program Develops Tactile Sense

The Montessori program helps develop the tactile (touch) sense through various
materials and activities designed by Maria Montessori.
Activities Include:
 Touch boards (rough and smooth)
 Fabric matching
 Sandpaper letters
 Mystery bag
Benefits:
 Improves sensitivity of touch
 Helps in writing preparation
 Develops muscle memory
 Enhances concentration
Children learn to identify differences without using their eyes, which strengthens brain
development.

6. Preparation of Smell Bottles and Mystery Bag

Smell Bottles
Materials:
 Small bottles
 Cotton
 Different scents (perfume, coffee, lemon, rose)
Preparation:
1. Put cotton in bottles
2. Add different smells
3. Close bottles properly
4. Make pairs of same smells
Purpose:
 Develop sense of smell
 Matching and identification

Mystery Bag
Materials:
 Cloth bag
 Small objects (key, coin, toy, button)
Preparation:
1. Put objects in bag
2. Child puts hand inside
3. Identifies object by touch
Purpose:
 Develop stereognostic sense
 Improve memory and concentration
