Reproduction Class8 Notes Updated

The document provides detailed notes on animal reproduction, focusing on the male and female reproductive systems, gamete formation, and the process of fertilization. It explains the roles of various reproductive organs, the significance of fertilization for species continuation and genetic variation, and distinguishes between internal and external fertilization. Additionally, it outlines the consequences when fertilization does not occur, including the degeneration of the ovum and the preparation for the next reproductive cycle.

Reproduction in Animals – Class 8 (Updated

Detailed Notes)

Male Reproductive System (Detailed)

The male reproductive system consists of: • **Testes** – produce sperms and the
hormone testosterone. • **Sperm duct** – carries sperms to the urethra. • **Penis**
– transfers sperms into the female body.

Female Reproductive System (Detailed)

The female reproductive system consists of: • **Ovaries** – produce ova (eggs)
and hormones. • **Oviducts (fallopian tubes)** – place where fertilization usually
occurs. • **Uterus** – where embryo develops. • **Cervix & Vagina** – form the
birth canal.

Gamete Formation
Gametes are the reproductive cells: • **Male gametes (sperms)** are produced in
testes through a process called spermatogenesis. • **Female gametes (ova)** are
produced in ovaries through oogenesis. Gametes carry only half the number of
chromosomes.

Process of Fertilization

Fertilization is the fusion of male and female gametes (sperm + ovum) to form a
**zygote**. This usually happens in the oviduct (fallopian tube). The zygote
undergoes cell division and develops into an embryo.

Importance of Fertilization

• Ensures continuation of species. • Combines genetic material from both parents.

• Leads to genetic variation in offspring. • Initiates embryo development.

Types of Fertilization

1. **Internal Fertilization** – fusion occurs inside the female body (e.g., humans,
cows, dogs). 2. **External Fertilization** – fusion happens outside the body,
usually in water (e.g., frogs, fish).

What Happens When Fertilization Does Not Occur?

If fertilization does not occur: • The ovum degenerates. • The uterus lining breaks
down and is discharged (in humans). • No embryo is formed. • The female is ready
for the next reproductive cycle.
