Class 9 Biology – Cell: Structure and Functions

(New Syllabus Notes)

Introduction
Cell is the structural and functional unit of life. All living organisms are made up of cells.

Discovery of Cell
Robert Hooke observed dead cork cells in 1665. Anton van Leeuwenhoek observed living cells.

Cell Theory
1. All living organisms are made of cells. 2. Cell is the basic unit of life. 3. New cells arise from
pre-existing cells.

Types of Cells
Prokaryotic: no true nucleus. Eukaryotic: true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.

Cell Organelles
Cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, plastids, ER, Golgi body, lysosomes, vacuoles.

Plant vs Animal Cell

Plant cells have cell wall and chloroplast. Animal cells lack them.
