AM Modulation and Demodulation Project

Abstract: This project explains amplitude modulation (AM) and demodulation techniques used in
communication systems. It includes theory, implementation, and applications.

Introduction: Amplitude Modulation is a process in which the amplitude of a high-frequency carrier

signal is varied according to the message signal.

Demodulation is the process of extracting the original message signal from the modulated wave.
Theory of AM:

In AM, the carrier signal is modified based on the message signal. The modulation index
determines the quality of modulation.

If modulation index is greater than 1, distortion occurs.

Types of AM: Double Sideband, Single Sideband, Vestigial Sideband.

Block Diagram:

Message Signal + Carrier Signal → Modulator → AM Signal

AM Signal → Demodulator → Recovered Signal

Components Used:

Function Generator, Diode, Resistor, Capacitor, Oscilloscope

Working of Modulation:

The message signal is combined with a high-frequency carrier signal to produce an

amplitude-modulated waveform.

Working of Demodulation:

Envelope detector extracts the original signal using diode and RC filter.
Waveforms:

Message Signal: Low frequency sine wave

Carrier Signal: High frequency sine wave

AM Signal: Envelope varies with message

Demodulated Signal: Original signal recovered

Applications:

Used in radio broadcasting, aviation communication, and analog TV transmission.

Advantages:

Simple implementation, low cost, easy to demodulate.

Disadvantages:

Low efficiency, affected by noise.

Conclusion:

AM modulation and demodulation were successfully studied and implemented. The original signal
was recovered effectively.
