Why people work today (importance of work)

o People work primarily to earn money that helps them meet their daily needs such as food,
clothing and medical care. Without income, it becomes difficult to survive in modern society.
o Many people work so they can provide for their children, spouses, and relatives. Work enables
parents to pay school fees, provide healthcare, and ensure their families live comfortably.
o Through work, individuals can afford better housing, education, and healthcare. It allows them
to move from a life of basic survival to one of comfort and security.
o People work to accomplish dreams such as owning property, starting a business, traveling, or
furthering their education. Work gives them the financial ability to reach these goals.
o Work provides opportunities to learn new skills, gain experience, and improve existing talents. It
helps individuals grow professionally and personally.

o Today some work is professional where by it requires formal education, training, and
certification. E.g doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, and accountants.
o Some today is talent-based depending on natural abilities, creativity, or special gifts rather than
formal education alone. People use their talents in areas such as music, sports, art, fashion
design, acting etc.
o Some work today is digital (online) and involves using the internet and digital technology to
provide goods or services. People work remotely as, teachers, digital marketers, graphic
designers etc.
o Today some work is intermediary whereby it middlemen act as intermediaries between
producers and consumers for example land and house brokers, agents, retailers etc.
o Some work today is non-professional and does not require formal formal education or
specialized certification e.g Boda-boda riding
o Some work today is voluntary mainly done to benefit the community rather than for personal
profit e.g helping the elderly, disaster response and church ministry.

Importance of community work

o Promotes teamwork. Community work brings people together to achieve a common goal. When
people work together they develop teamwork and strengthen social bonds.
o Promotes social responsibility. community work teaches people to care about others and their
surroundings hence individuals understand that everyone has a role in improving society.
o Improves living conditions. Community participation can lead to better sanitation, improved
schools, cleaner environments, and safer neighborhoods. This improves the overall quality of
life.
o Promoted skill development. Through community work, people learn leadership,
communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. These skills can also help in
professional life.
o Promotes unity. When people work together, misunderstandings reduce and cooperation
