Unit 6: Grammar Lesson 4: Relative Pronouns

What is a Relative Pronoun?

A relative pronoun connects a noun (a person, place, thing, or idea) to a clause that gives more
information about that noun. It refers back to the noun and starts a relative clause.

e.g. The boy who called is my brother

• Noun: The boy

• Relative pronoun: who (refers back to boy)

• Connection: who connects the boy to the action of calling.

Pronoun Used for Example

Who People (subject of the clause) The teacher who helped me is kind.

Whom People (object of the clause - formal) The student whom I met is friendly.

Which Animals or things The book which is on the table is mine.

That People, animals, or things The car that I bought is red.

Whose Possession (for people, animals, things) The man whose phone rang left the room.

Where Places The park where we used to play has been sold.

When Times I remember the day when we first met


Exercise 1 : Fill in the blank with the correct relative pronoun: who, which, that, whose, or whom.
(Sometimes more than one is possible.)

1. The man who / that called you is my uncle.

2. The laptop which / that I bought yesterday is already broken.

3. That's the student whose father is the mayor.

4. The movie which / that we saw last night was boring.

5. Do you know the girl who / that is wearing the red dress?

6. The person to whom you should speak is Mrs. Smith.

7. I love the pizza which / that my mom makes.

8. This is the artist whose paintings are worth millions.

Exercises 2 : Combine the two sentences into one sentence using a relative pronoun. Make the second
sentence the relative clause.

Example: I have a friend. She speaks five languages.


→ I have a friend who speaks five languages.

1. I saw the car. It won the race.

➢ I saw the car which / that won the race.

2. The woman is my neighbor. Her dog bit the mailman

➢ The woman whose dog bit the mailman is my neighbor.

3. That is the restaurant. We had our first dinner there.

➢ That is the restaurant where we had our first dinner.

4. The author wrote a new book. She lives in London.

➢ The author who lives in London wrote a new book.

5. I need to return the book. I borrowed it from the library.

➢ I need to return the book which / that borrowed from the library.
