Instructions: Answer any EIGHT (8) parts. Each part carries 5 marks.

i. Find the asymptotes of y = (x2 − 1)/(x − 2) and discuss the behaviour of the curve.

ii. Verify Rolle's Theorem for f(x) = x2 − 4 on [−2, 2].

iii. Evaluate ∫ x2/(x3 + 1) dx using substitution.

iv. Find dy/dx for the curve x2 + xy + y2 = 7 at the point (2, 1) using implicit differentiation.

v. Convert the equation of conic 4x2 + 9y2 − 24x + 18y + 9 = 0 to standard form and identify the conic.

vi. Show that the vectors 2i − j + k, 3i + 4j − 2k, and i + 5j − 3k are linearly dependent.

vii. Use the method of Lagrange multipliers to maximise f(x, y) = xy subject to x + y = 10.

viii. Apply integration by parts twice to evaluate ∫ x2ex dx.

ix. Find the equation of a common tangent to the circle x2 + y2 = 4 and the parabola y2 = 4x.

x. Evaluate ∫0π/2 sin2x cos2x dx.

xi. Graph the system: 3x + 2y ≤ 12, x + 2y ≤ 8, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0. Identify the feasible region vertices.

xii. Using L'Hôpital's Rule, evaluate limx→0 (x − sin x)/x3.

Q3. Calculus — Mean Value Theorem and Applications


(a) State and prove the Mean Value Theorem. Apply it to f(x) = √x on [1, 4].
(b) A particle moves along y = x3 − 3x. At t = 0, x = 2 and dx/dt = 1. Find dy/dt. Discuss concavity of
the path.

Q4. Integration — Techniques


(a) Decompose into partial fractions and integrate: (3x + 7)/((x − 1)(x + 3)).
(b) Find the volume of the solid of revolution generated by rotating y = √x from x = 0 to x = 4 about the
x-axis.

Q5. Analytic Geometry — Combined Conics


(a) Two tangents are drawn from the point (−1, 3) to the parabola y2 = 8x. Find their equations.
(b) Find the equation of the hyperbola with foci (±5, 0) and transverse axis 8.

Q6. Vectors — Lines and Planes


(a) Find the equation of the line through (1, 2, 3) parallel to vector 2i − j + k in both parametric and
symmetric form.
(b) Find the shortest distance between the skew lines r1 = i + j + t(2i − j + k) and r2 = 2i + j − k + s(3i +
2j − k).

Q7. Linear Programming — Sensitivity


A hospital pharmacy procures two medicines A and B. Medicine A costs Rs. 50/unit with a vitamin
content of 3 units; Medicine B costs Rs. 30/unit with 2 units vitamin content. Budget is Rs. 1,200 and
at least 60 vitamin units are needed. Minimise cost.
Formulate the LPP, solve graphically, and verify using the simplex concept.
