Instructions: Answer any EIGHT (8) parts. Each part carries 5 marks.

i. Using the quotient rule, differentiate f(x) = (x2 − 1)/(x + 1).

ii. Evaluate ∫ x·ex dx using integration by parts.

iii. Find the equation of the tangent to the curve y = x3 at the point (1, 1).

iv. Solve using Cramer's rule: 2x + y = 5, x − y = 1.

v. Find the equation of the ellipse with vertices (±5, 0) and co-vertices (0, ±3).

vi. Verify that f(x) = |x| is continuous but not differentiable at x = 0.

vii. Given A = 3i + 2j − k and B = i − j + 2k, find the scalar and vector projections of A onto B.

viii. Maximise P = 5x + 4y subject to: x + y ≤ 6, 2x + y ≤ 8, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0.

ix. Evaluate ∫14 (√x + 1/√x) dx.

x. Find the centre and radius of the circle x2 + y2 + 4x − 6y − 3 = 0.

xi. Evaluate: limx→0 (ex − 1)/x.

xii. Find the angle between vectors A = i + j and B = i − j.

Q3. Differentiation — Application
(a) Using the chain rule, differentiate y = sin(x2 + 3x) and hence find the equation of the normal at x =
0.
(b) A 10 m ladder leans against a wall. If the foot slides away at 2 m/s, find the rate at which the top of
the ladder descends when the foot is 6 m from the wall.

Q4. Integration — Definite Integrals


(a) Evaluate ∫0π sin x dx and interpret the result geometrically.
(b) Find the area bounded by y = x2 − 5x + 6 and the x-axis between x = 2 and x = 3.

Q5. Analytic Geometry — Conics


(a) Find the asymptotes of the hyperbola x2/16 − y2/9 = 1. Sketch the hyperbola.
(b) Find the length of the latus rectum and the eccentricity of the ellipse 9x2 + 4y2 = 36.

Q6. Vectors in 3-D


(a) Find the volume of the parallelepiped with edges A = i + 2j − k, B = 3i + j + 2k, C = 2i − j + 3k.
(b) Find the equation of the plane passing through points (1, 0, 0), (0, 1, 0), and (0, 0, 1).

Q7. Linear Programming — Two-Variable


A factory makes two products X and Y. Machine A requires 3 hrs/unit X and 1 hr/unit Y; Machine B
requires 2 hrs/unit X and 3 hrs/unit Y. Machine A is available for 12 hrs and Machine B for 15 hrs.
Profit is Rs. 4 per unit X and Rs. 5 per unit Y.
Formulate the LPP, draw the feasible region, and find the optimal solution.
