ii. Evaluate ∫ dx/(x2√(x2 + 4)) using the substitution x = 2 tan θ.
iii. Find all critical points and classify them for f(x) = 2x4 − 8x2 + 6.
iv. Using eigenvalues, determine the nature of the quadratic form Q = 2x2 + 3y2 − 4xy.
v. Find the equation of the sphere with centre (1, −2, 3) and passing through (3, 0, 5).
vi. Evaluate ∫01 (ln x)/√x dx (improper integral — justify convergence).
vii. Find the envelope of the family of lines x/a + y/b = 1 where a + b = c (constant).
viii. Determine whether the system 2x − y + z = 3, x + 2y − z = 0, x − y + 2z = 1 is consistent and solve if
possible.
ix. Find the angle of intersection of circles x2 + y2 = 4 and x2 + y2 − 4x − 4y + 4 = 0.
x. Evaluate ∫ x3/(x4 + 1) dx and discuss the behaviour of the antiderivative.
xi. Find the directrix and focus of the conic r = 6/(1 + 2cos θ) and identify the conic.
xii. Using Newton-Raphson method, find an approximation to √3 starting from x0 = 1.5.

(a) Differentiate implicitly: x3 + y3 = 3axy (folium of Descartes). Find the slope at (3a/2, 3a/2).
(b) A conical tank (vertex down) with height 12 m and radius 4 m is being filled at 2 m3/min. How fast
is the water level rising when h = 6 m?
Q4. Integration — Advanced Techniques
(a) Evaluate ∫0π x sin x / (1 + cos2x) dx using the property of definite integrals.
(b) Find the arc length of the curve y = (1/3)x3/2 from x = 0 to x = 9.
Q5. Conics — Advanced Properties
(a) Prove that the locus of the foot of the perpendicular from a focus to any tangent of an ellipse is the
auxiliary circle.
(b) Find the pair of tangents drawn from (4, 4) to the ellipse x2/4 + y2/9 = 1 and determine the chord of
contact.
Q6. Vectors — Advanced
(a) Show that the four points A(1, 2, −1), B(0, −1, 1), C(2, 0, −3), D(3, 3, −5) are coplanar. Find the
equation of the plane containing them.
(b) Find the position vector of the foot of the perpendicular from (1, 1, 1) to the line r = 2i + j − k + t(i − j
+ 2k).
Q7. Linear Programming — Duality
Formulate and solve the primal problem: Minimise C = 4x + 6y subject to x + y ≥ 6, 2x + 3y ≥ 14, x ≥ 0,
y ≥ 0.
Also write the dual of this problem. Verify that the optimal values of the primal and dual are equal
(weak duality).
