Tutorial 6

The document outlines various design problems related to sanitary engineering, including grit chambers, sedimentation tanks, trickling filters, and activated sludge treatment plants. It provides specific parameters such as flow rates, BOD levels, and particle sizes for calculations and design requirements. The focus is on determining dimensions, efficiencies, and sludge production based on given data.

Sanitary Engineering

Tutorial 6

1. A grit chamber is designed to remove particle with a diameter of 0.2mm, specific gravity 2.65, settling
velocity of these particles 0.016 – 0.22 m/sec, depending upon their shape factor. A flow through
velocity of 0.3 m/sec will be maintained by proportioning weir. Determine the channel dimensions for
a maximum wastewater flow of 10,000 m³/day.

2. Design a grit chamber for following data.

Specific gravity of grit particles : 2.65
Dia. of smallest particles to be removed : 0.2 mm
Average temperature : 20°C
Maximum flow : 80 MLD Assume other data if not provided.

3. A sedimentation tank treats 12 MLD sewage flow per day containing 240 mg/L of suspended solids.
The tank removes 65% of the suspended solids. Compute the weight and volume of sludge produced
yearly if moisture content is a) 92% b) 98%.

4. Design a circular sewage sedimentation tank for a town having population of 70,000. The average
water demand is 100 lpcd. Assume that 80% water reaches at the treatment unit and maximum
demand is 1.8 times the average demand. Check surface loading also.

5. Design a rectangular sedimentation tank for given discharge (in Q. No. 4).

6. In a continuous flow sedimentation tank, 3.5m deep, 60 m long, if flow velocity of sewage is
observed as 1.20 cm/sec, what size of particles with specific gravity 2.65 may be effectively
removed? Assume 25°C temperature and kinematic viscosity of water is 0.01 cm²/sec.

7. Calculate the effluent BOD of a two stage trickling filter with following data.
a) Flow = 4x106 liters/day
b) BOD = 250 mg/L
c) Vol. of filter no. 1 = 600 m³
d) Vol. of filter no. 2 = 400 m³
e) Recirculation ratio = 1.5 for both filters.
8. Design a single stage bio-filter to produce an effluent with BOD concentration of 20 mg/L for a flow
of sewage of 4 MLD having BOD of raw sewage 300 mg/L. Assume suitable data.
9. Determine the size of a HRTF (High rate trickling filter) with following data:
a) Sewage flow = 5 MLD
b) Recirculation ratio = 1.5
c) BOD of raw sewage = 230 mg/L
d) BOD removal in primary clarifier = 30%
e) Final effluent BOD desired = 25 mg/L

10. The effluent from PST is applied to a standard rate trickling filter at the rate of 3 MLD having a BOD
of 190 mg/L. Determine the depth and volume of the filter adopting (hydraulic) surface loading of
2000 liters/m².day. Also determine the efficiency of the filter using NRC equation.

11. A municipal waste water having a BOD of 200 mg/L is to be treated by a two stage trickling filters.
The desired effluent is of 25 mg/L quality of BOD. If depth of both of filters is 1.8 m and recirculation
ratio 2:1, find the required filter diameters. Assume, Q = 7560 m³/day and assume that the efficiency of
the first stage is same with the second stage trickling filter.

12. Design a conventional activated sludge treatment plant to treat the domestic sewage with diffused air
aeration with the following data.
Population = 50,000
Per capita sewage flow = 80 liters/day
Settled sewage BOD5 = 200 mg/L
Food/micro-organisms = 0.3
Conc. of microorganisms (MLSS) = 2000 mg/L

13 Design a conventional activated sludge treatment plant to treat the settled domestic sewage with
diffused air aeration system having the following data.
Population = 320,000
Per capita sewage flow = 100 liters/day
Settled sewage BOD5 = 250 mg/L
Effluent BOD5 required = 20 mg/L Assume any other data required.

14. Design an oxidation pond for treating sewage from a hot climatic residential colony with 2000 persons
contributing sewage at the rate of 100 lpcd. The BOD5 of sewage is 300 mg/L.
15. Design an oxidation pond to treat 5000 m³/day of domestic sewage which has a BOD 5 of 330 mg/L.
Assume acceptable BOD5 loading to be 220 kg/day and depth of 1 m.
