Objective: Students will be able to construct a
model and describe characteristics of the nuclei
of individual atoms.
1. Electron
2. Neutron
3. Proton
Vocabulary 4. Nucleus
List 5.
6.
Atomic Number
Mass Number
7. Atomic Mass
8. Isotope
What are atoms made up of?
● Protons(+) - Important in
identification and mass
● Electrons (-) - Important
in bonding and reactivity
● Neutrons (0) - Important
in stability and mass
Atomic Structure
● The center of an atom is
called the nucleus.
● This is where most of
the mass of an atom
comes from.
● Composed of the protons
and neutrons.
● The electrons orbit
around the nucleus.
Characteristics of the Nucleus
● Any atom of the same element always has the
same number of protons.
● We call this the atomic number and it is
essentially the identity of the atom.
Characteristics of the Nucleus
● The nucleus has more than protons.
○ There are also neutrons.
○ They help stabilize the nucleus and add
mass to an atom.
● The sum of protons and neutrons makes the
mass number of an atom.
Since this is a
count of neutrons
and protons, the
mass number is
always a whole
number!
What Parts of an Atom can change?
● We cannot change the number of protons in
an atom or we change the identity of the
atom (different element)
● If we change the number of electrons, we
change the overall charge of the atom, but
its identity is the same.
● If we change the number of neutrons, then
we create an isotope of the element.
○ An isotope is an atom of the same
element that has a different mass
How to Tell The top number is the
Isotopes Apart mass number (P+N)
The bottom number is
the atomic number
(Protons)
You can also write:
element name - Mass number
Carbon-14
What can we do with this information?
Atomic Number
● Organize information
from the periodic
table
Symbol
● The atomic mass is
the average mass of
all an element’s Name
isotopes. (will be a
decimal) Atomic Mass
IF WE ASSUME NO CHARGE, Mass Number is the
rounded off atomic
● Atomic Number mass.
● Protons
● Electrons Mass number is the
number of Protons and
Are the same Neutrons added
together.
