Toothpaste Analysis Project

This investigatory project analyzes the presence of anions and cations in toothpaste samples from Colgate and Close-Up to determine their quality. The results indicate that Colgate contains a greater variety of essential ions compared to Close-Up, suggesting a better overall composition. The project includes a detailed procedure, observations, and necessary precautions for conducting the experiments.

Chemistry Investigatory Project XII: Toothpaste Analysis

This investigatory project focuses on identifying different anions and cations present in toothpaste samples such as
Colgate and Close-Up. The experiment compares the quality of toothpaste based on the ions detected through
qualitative analysis tests.

Aim
To detect the presence of different anions and cations in different brands of toothpaste and determine their quality.

Theory
Qualitative analysis is used to identify radicals (cations and anions) present in compounds. Toothpaste commonly
contains calcium carbonate, fluoride compounds, detergents, and flavoring agents.

Requirements
Toothpaste samples (Colgate, Close-Up), Hydrochloric acid, Sulphuric acid, Barium chloride, Ammonium hydroxide,
Silver nitrate, Test tubes, Beakers, Flame source, and droppers.

Procedure
Preliminary tests like colour, odour, dry heating, and flame tests are performed. Further tests are carried out to identify
anions and cations using confirmatory chemical reactions.

Observations and Inference Table

Toothpaste Ca²■ Mg²■ SO■²■ CO■²■ PO■³■

Colgate Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Close-Up Yes No Yes No No

Conclusion
Based on the comparative analysis, Colgate toothpaste contains a greater number of essential ions compared to
Close-Up toothpaste. Hence, Colgate was found to have better overall composition according to the performed tests.

Precautions
1. Handle acids carefully.
2. Use droppers for concentrated chemicals.
3. Never directly smell vapours.
4. Use proper safety equipment during experiments.
