EEE1001 Tutorial 3 Total marks: 20

1. A magnetic circuit has an air gap. Given, cross-sectional area, A = 1.8 × 10-3 m2, mean core
length lc = 0.6 m, air-gap length lg = 2.3 x 10-3 m, number of turns of the coil, N = 83. Assuming
infinite permeability for the core and neglecting fringing effects around the air gap and leakage
flux, (a) calculate the reluctances of the core and the air gap. If the current in the coil i is 1.5
A, also calculate (b) the total flux ϕ, and (c) the self-inductance L of the coil. (6)

2. Write short answers to the following: (3 × 3 = 9)

(a) State the functions of the following components in a DC machine:
(i) prime mover, (ii) commutator, (iii) brushes
(b) Why does a single-phase induction motor fail to start on its own?
(c) Why is the speed of the rotor in an induction motor less than the synchronous speed?

3. A single-phase transformer is rated at 150 kVA, 1200/240 V, 60 Hz. The maximum flux
density in its core is 1.2 T, and the induced EMF per turn in the primary side is 4.8 V. Determine:
(i) the cross-sectional area of the transformer core, and
(ii) the number of turns on the primary and secondary windings. (5)
