Question 1:

To commemorate Singapore World Water Day, Accolade University decides to design and install
a huge water droplet sculpture in the campus.
Diagram 1 is an artist’s impression of the actual sculpture. The sculpture will be made by joining
together a cone and a hemisphere, as shown in Diagram 2.
BM is the radius of the hemisphere and AM is the height of the cone.

(a) Given that BM = 1.2 m and the whole sculpture is 2.8 m tall, show that AB = 2 m. [2]

(b) A cylindrical metal rod, as shown in Diagram 3, will be melted to make the
sculpture. The length of each rod is 2 m and the radius is 0.05 m.
Each rod costs $1800.
