LLB Contracts 2024 - 2025
Dear Colleagues,
Re: LLB Contracts Teaching Arrangements for Semester 1
Thank you for being part of our LLB Contracts teaching team. This memorandum sets
out the teaching arrangements for the upcoming semester.
Administrative Arrangements
1. Teachers’ Manual: You should have received the Teachers’ Manual from Victoria
Kwok. Information on administrative matters, point persons for various matters
can be found in the Manual.
2. Points of Contact:
✓ Victoria Kwok (headlaw@[Link]): all administrative matters; Moodle
assistance; employment matters; classroom issues; stationery.
✓ Josephine Ho ([Link]@[Link]): cancellation of class and booking of
venue for makeup class. Please copy Victoria Kwok in correspondence.
✓ Benjamin Chen (benched@[Link]) or Massimo Lando (mlando@[Link]):
academic matters.
Pedagogical Arrangements
1. Expectations of Students: All students are expected to complete the assignments and
contribute to group discussion. Tutorials should go beyond recitation of course
readings to encourage independent and critical analysis of the law.
2. Attendance Taking: Please take the attendance for each class. Students are only
allowed to attend tutorials for their own groups. In the interest of fairness, please
implement this rule strictly.
Please also note that tutorial attendance is compulsory, and students may be barred
from sitting for the final exam should they fail to attend 70% of the tutorials. Given
that there are only 5 tutorials per semester, please inform Hazel Sze (hsze@[Link]) if
a student fails to turn up twice in any given semester and copy me (benched@[Link])
in the email. The Office will issue a warning letter to the truant student and reach out
to offer support. Your co-operation is crucial to timely detection of family or mental
health struggles.
3. Assignment Submission: Submission of the assignments will be made via Moodle.
You should be able to access the student assignments on Moodle according to their
tutorial groups.
✓ Please go to Moodle via HKU Portal or
[Link] .
✓ The submissions are sorted according to the students’ tutorial groups. You
may ‘filter’ your tutorial assignments by tutorial group numbers and
download them in one zip file. Please follow the following steps after logging
in the Moodle page for our course:
1. Topic ➔ Assignment ➔ View/grade all submissions ➔ Go to
‘Separate groups’ on the top of the page, and select your tutorial group
(e.g. Group 1) ➔ Go to ‘Grading action’ above the ‘Separate groups’
box and choose ‘Download all submissions’.
2. All submissions in that group (e.g. Group 1) will be downloaded in one
single zip file.
3. Repeat the above for your other tutorial groups.
4. Tutor Preparation: Updates on the progress of the lectures will be sent at the
beginning of each tutorial cycle. Suggested answers will be provided for selected
tutorial questions, but you are free to depart from these suggestions. Please do not
circulate the suggested answers to students. Feedback and comments on the tutorial
materials will be gratefully received.
5. Individualised Feedback: Please note that each student should receive individualised
feedback on at least one assignment per semester. Please remind students that any
grades you might assign as part of individualised feedback is purely indicative.
6. Group Feedback: Given the number of assignments, we understand that you may not
be able to offer individualised comments or grades all the time. You should try,
however, to structure the group discussion to address common weaknesses.
7. Grading Policy: Tutors are free to determine how their students’ written submissions
and oral submissions should be weighted and evaluated. This discretion should,
however, be exercised in conformance with the grading criteria set out in the
introductory hand-out. Adherence to the following policies will also help ensure
consistency and fairness between tutorial groups:
a. Assignments are always due on the Sunday before tutorials take place, at
10 a.m.
b. Please award a summative letter grade to each of your tutees at the end of
each semester, paying attention to the following distribution:
• A+, A, and A-: not more than 20%
• B+, B, B-: not more than 60%
• C+, C, C-: not more than 25%
• D+ and below: remainder of the class
8. Record Keeping: Please forward records of class attendance and grades to me at the
end of each semester. These records are for computation of the final course grade and
will not be released to students.
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions. I look forward to working
with you to make this course an enriching learning experience for our students.
Yours sincerely,
Benjamin Chen
